Alps Industries Ltd is a multi-locational textile company with manufacturing facilities spread out across eight locations in the Northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. It recorded a turnover of US $211 million in the previous fiscal year (2008-09) and is amongst the few textile companies in India to have the 'Oeko-Tex Standard 100'.

Alps is mainly involved in production of a varied range of products like cotton and blended yarn, blinds, rods & fashion accessories, floorings & paneling, home furnishing for exports and high functional car upholstery. Alps is also involved in the recycling of cotton waste generated at different stages of manufacturing and manufacturing fabrics from organic cotton along with a host of CSR activities.

In an exclusive interview with Fibre2fashion, Sandeep Agarwal the dynamic 41 year old Managing Director of Alps Industries discussed with us a varied range of subjects and challenges. Under his leadership, the company has setup a nationwide distribution system for the company's products and is also instrumental in diversifying into value-added lines like the Vista range of interior decoratives.

We began by asking him about the impact of the recent flare up in cotton prices on their operations, domestic and export sales, to which he said, “It did have quite a negative impact initially, but as the dust has settled down and since it is now a global phenomenon, the buyers are relenting to this situation but we did take a hit of 25 percent in our export sales of made-ups.

Next we asked him to divulge the main reasons for venturing in to organic cotton, recycled cotton and recycled polyester, to which he replied by saying, “We ventured into organic & re-cycled products, in 2007 to leverage the growing awareness of environmental issues in the Western Markets, particularly the U.S.A.”

When asked as to how the 'Oeko-Tex Standard 100' certificate helps the company, he said, “The certificate is primarily for the European Market, which is a focus area for us, this year & going forward, as the domestic manufacturing industry in Europe is almost non-existent now.”

To conclude the interview we asked him about the 'Sustainability Green' campaign and activities of the company related to 'Corporate Social Responsibility' (CSR), to which he articulately said, “Our contribution to the 'Sustainability Green' campaign comes from our forays in to organic cotton, recycled cotton and polyester to produce fabrics.

“With regards to CSR activities we educate and create awareness among the truck drivers visiting our company on precautions from AIDS & H1N1, conservation of water and provide awareness to the school children for the same and providing financial assistance for promotion of socio- cultural activities organized by the local society”, he concluded by saying.
