Kelheim to present New Functional Fibres at IDEA

Kelheim Fibres GmbH, the leading producer of viscose speciality fibres, will showcase a wide range of highlights at this year's IDEA in Miami. In addition to the well-known brands Danufil, Galaxy and Viloft nonwoven Kelheim presents a number of fibres with new and distinctive properties.

Extremely high absorbency is the shared characteristic of the new fibres Verdi, Bramante, Dante and Bellini. Beyond that they offer various special effects such as excellent dispersability in water, a gel effect on the fibre surface or outstanding self-bonding properties. As a result these new fibres are ideally suited for many potential applications – from medical and hygiene products to filters and speciality papers. Coagulating wound dressings, absorbent blotting papers or extra tearresistant banknotes and tea bags are just a few of numerous products which derive their typical properties from Kelheim's viscose specialities.

Along with new extra-absorbent fibres, Kelheim Fibres introduces further innovations:
Deep-Dye is a chemically modified viscose speciality fibre with up to 40 times higher dye absorption capacity than a standard viscose fibre. Originally developed to optimise the dyeing process of viscose textile products, this fibre also offers interesting properties for non-textile end uses: These highly specialised viscose fibres are processed to make papers and nonwovens which can easily be converted to any form required – and therefore can be used, for example, in filtration cartridges for the decolouration of the waste water of dyeing factories.

With the equally new speciality fibre Poseidon, Kelheim Fibres launches for the first time a viscose fibre with ion exchange properties. The advantages of Poseidon fibres in comparison with ion exchange granulates are clear: the active substance is packed into in the fibre and simplifies the further processing. Integrated in papers or nonwovens, these fibres serve their purpose mainly in filters, e.g. for water softening of potable water via tea bags or coffee pads. By charging the fibres with metal ions such as silver or copper it is possible to achieve an antimicrobial effect for medical applications.

In addition to the easy processing the main advantage of Poseidon fibres is the high transfer rate: “Due to the very small ion exchange particles, the high number of fine and short viscose fibres in the paper and finally the accessibility of the viscose fibre, we obtain a very large active surface which enables a very effective application”, explains Walter Roggenstein, head of Kelheim Fibres' R&D department. He adds: “Our new fibre developments are the basis for innovative tailor-made solutions for the individual requirements of our customers and we are looking forward to interesting and productive conversations when we present these novelties for the first time at the IDEA.”

With these new fibres Kelheim Fibres extends its already wide range of viscose specialities and puts once again a strong focus on papers and nonwovens. “We are the only European manufacturer of viscose short cut fibres and see a huge potential in supplying fibres for speciality papers. The markets for tea bags, coffee pads or any kind of filters are growing rapidly, as are the production capacities of the relevant paper producers. At the same time we can offer fibres with yet more functionality and so broaden the range of potential applications– I'm expecting fascinating developments” says Matthew North, Commercial Director of Kelheim Fibres.

Kelheim supplies short cut from 0.75dtex to 9dtex with cut lengths from 4mm to12mm and is therefore able to fulfil the needs of very different customers and very different production processes. Different fibre cross sections, a wide range of fibre properties and dry short cut for the airlaid industry broaden Kelheim's range of products even more.
