The Surat textile cluster, is better known as the largest man-made fibre goods manufacturing hub in India, But now, in order to increase the viability and generate better returns, a textile entrepreneur is exploring opportunities outside the synthetic fabrics segment.

The Mr Mahendra Chaudhary owned, Pratibha Textiles Ltd has ventured into production of linen fabrics from natural fibres, which is derived from flax. As of date, the Aditya Birla group company, Jayashree Textiles is the biggest producer of linen in India and also has a chain of retail stores in the name of 'Linen Club”.

Linen is a high-value fabric, which is made from flax, a natural fibre, derived from the stalk of the flax plant and which is mostly imported. It is mainly meant for high-temperature summers, as it is a good conductor of heat, can be easily dyed, with very low fading properties and does not wrinkle easily.

Revealing his plans to Fibre2fashion, Mr Rakesh Chaudhary, Director of Pratibha Textiles Ltd said, “Owners of textile mills & other weaving & yarn preparatory segments are diversifying to power projects & other activities. We opted for manufacturing of linen fabrics and as of date, we are the only producer of linen fabrics in Surat.

Continuing he said, “Linen is made out of natural fibre; flax and has better luster and sweat absorption properties and also a better value addition”. Discussing their expansion plans he revealed that this year, they will raise their capacity by 50 percent and in the next year, they will double capacity.

When asked about the future of linen fabrics in the Surat market, he optimistically replied by saying, “Nothing is impossible in Surat, however since the working capital requirement is huge, small & medium enterprises will find it difficult, but big textile players are closely watching and they may also venture in to linen production, but not in near future”.
