Bata to increase its retail presence over next 3-yrs

Bata India, the popular footwear producer and retailer, plans to open a new large-format outlet and refurbish the existing ones within the next three months. It will spend around Rs 1.5-2 billion for this project. This amount will also be spent for setting up new plant and equipments, informed PM Sinha, Company Chairman, while addressing a press meet during their annual general meeting.
During this fiscal, the company has set a target of establishing 70 new large-format stores and has also planned to close down 24 cash-drained stores. Last year, Bata renovated 40 stores, while shutting down 73 small-format outlets, informed the Chairman. Currently, the company operates more than 1,250 retail stores across the country.
The terms and conditions that were formulated for the development of an integrated township project of the company at Batanagar in West Bengal have also been restructured by Bata India. It has already received a large share of the upfront amount, and will also obtain free constructed area of about 640,000 square feet in this project.
The company, in the year 2005, established a new company in 50-50 partnership with Calcutta Metropolitan Group Ltd (CMGL) in order to build the integrated township.
The footwear producer and retailer is currently supplying specially-designed shoes to the arm forces, and is therefore, witnessing a substantial business in this trade, informed Sinha.
