Shaw Industries is to shortly close down its spun yarn plant in Murray in Chatsworth, Ga., which would affect 306 workers.

As stated by the company officials, the closure is a part of the company's total adaptation from spun and stapled yarn to new filament-based carpets, which according to the customers gives a better feel and has better durability.

Al Scruggs, Director of Human Resources at Shaw Industries stated that, stapled fibres are recoiling, though not completely but their sales are dropping. He further said that, they are not working on any deliberated plan, but are just following the consumer likings.

The company even shut its similar Georgia plants in Calhoun, Trenton, Ringgold and Stevenson, Ala., during 2008 and 2009.

Closure of the Ringgold plant resulted in loss of around 430 jobs. However, 200 of these workers were provided alternative employment in Calhoun based plant. On the whole, the company cut over 1,700 jobs in the Tri-State area based yarn plants during 2008 and 2009.

Scruggs said that, workers of the Plant 82 will be provided employment in any one of the three Shaw plants based in Chatsworth or in other facilities in vicinity.
