Thailand's PTT Chemical PCL, one of Asia's largest ethylene makers will temporarily close down two of its plants in the fourth quarter of 2006 for maintenence purposes.
Besides it will undergo expansion to increase ethylene production capacity by 130,000 tons per year.
PTT Chemical will spend about $120 million for maintenance and expansion and is expected to be completed in the beginning of 2007. The shutdown will affect propylene production too.
PTT Chemical was formed earlier in December through a merger of Thai Olefins PCL and National Petrochemical PCL to consolidate its sprawling business.
Currently, it holds 1.523 million tons production capacity for olefins products per year, consisting of 1.146 million tons of ethylene and 377,000 tons of propylene.
