Thailand's textile & apparel exports rise marginally in Q1

Thailand’s textile and apparel exports for January to March period have increased marginally by 1.1 percent from US$ 1.82 billion in 2012 to US$ 1.84 billion in 2013, according to a report by the Thai Garment Manufacturers Association (TGMA) and the Thailand Textile Institute (THTI).
 
Segment-wise, textile exports from the Southeast Asian country for the first quarter increased by 6.37 percent from US$ 1.07 billion in 2012 to US$ 1.13 billion in 2013, the report stated.
 
However, the exports of apparel from Thailand declined by 6.43 percent from US$ 749 million to US$ 701 million for the same period.
 
For the first three months of 2013, the US turned out to be the largest consumer country of Thailand’s apparel items with imports worth US$ 249.9 million. Japan was the second largest nation for Thailand’s clothing with imports worth US$ 101.17 million during the three-month period.
 
The other major markets for Thailand’s textiles and apparels were the European Union, China (including Hong Kong), South Korea and the ASEAN countries.
 
In 2012, Thailand’s annual export of textile and apparel decreased by 12 percent from 2011 and was worth US$ 7.22 billion. Its export of textile dipped by 13.68 percent year-on-year to US$ 4.27 billion, while apparel exports fell by 9.95 percent year-on-year to US$ 2.95 billion.
