Chinese textile & apparel exports to Japan dip in Jan-Feb

The exports of textiles and apparel from China to Japan declined by 8.31 percent year-on-year to US$ 3.55 billion in the first two months of the current year, according to the Chinese customs statistics. Of this, textile exports were valued at $680 million, up 0.75 percent, while apparel exports were worth $2.87 billion, down 10.23 percent.
 
Among textiles segment, China’s yarn exports to Japan in January-February 2014 was 470 million kg amounting to $62.33 million. The average export price worked out to $5.07 per kg, down 12 percent year-on-year. Of this, exports of cotton and synthetic yarn grew by 22.36 percent and 16 percent, respectively, while exports of silk and wool yarn declined by 24 percent and 13 percent, respectively.
 
During the two-month period, China exported 58.89 million metres of fabric to Japan, down 6.71 percent year-on-year. In terms of value, the exports were down 5.6 percent and fetched $81.06 million. Of this, export volume of wool woven fabrics saw the highest decline of 32.31 percent, but its average price rose by 10.53 percent. Likewise, cotton fabric exports fell by 14.7 percent, but its average price increased by 3.61 percent. However, the volume of synthetic fabric exports remained same as that of previous year.
 
Meanwhile, China’s non-woven fabric exports to Japan increased by 17 percent year-on-year during the two-month period, whereas home textile exports decreased by 4.33 percent to $240 million. The export of industrial textile products continued to maintain high growth trend and their export volume increased by 47 percent, the data showed.
 
In the initial two months of 2014, China exported 830 million sets of clothing to Japan, valued at $2.87 billion, down 2.5 percent and 10.23 percent respectively. The average export price also decreased by 8 percent year-on-year. Of this, the average price of cotton knit and woven garments fell 1.8 percent and 5 percent, respectively. The average price of man-made fibre knit and woven apparel dropped 6.32 percent and 10 percent, respectively. The average price of wool knitted and woven clothing dipped 40 percent and 32 percent, respectively, leading to a sharp 69 percent and 83 percent rise in their exports.
