Portuguese textile & garment exports maintain growth trend

The exports of textiles and clothing from Portugal maintained robust growth trend during the first five months of 2014, according to the Textile and Apparel Association of Portugal (ATP).

From January to May 2014, Portuguese exports of textiles and apparel earned €1.959 billion, growing at 11.2 percent over exports of €1.762 billion made during the corresponding period of last year, as per ATP data.

Exports of knitted garments and accessories grew by 12 percent year-on-year to €779.32 million, whereas exports of non-knitted or crocheted clothing and accessories increased by 16.9 percent to €384.962 million, during the five-month period.

Exports of textiles (except home textiles) rose by 10 percent year-on-year to €538.589 million during the period under review, whereas exports of home textiles and other made-up articles increased by 4.1 percent to €257.119 million.

In terms of destination, the 28 EU-member nations accounted for €1.618 billion or 82.6 percent of the total value of textile and clothing exports from Portugal during the period. Of this, exports to Spain increased by 14.6 percent year-on-year to €619.414 million, and those to France surged by 22.9 percent to €278.952 million.

Portugal’s textile and garment exports to non-EU countries grew at 9.4 percent year-on-year to €341.485 million, contributing 17.4 percent in overall earnings received by the country. Of this, exports to the United States jumped by 16.2 percent to €87.489 million.

The Portuguese textile and apparel sector accounts for about 155,000 direct jobs. Last year, the sector’s exports increased by 3.5 percent year-on-year to €4.3 billion.
