The Unites States, Mexico and Canada have asserted their commitment to update the trilateral North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) after the first round of talks for renegotiating the pact concluded recently in Washington. Representatives from the three countries presented their arguments during the five-day negotiations that ended on August 20.

“While a great deal of effort and negotiation will be required in the coming months, Canada, Mexico and the United States are committed to an accelerated and comprehensive negotiation process that will upgrade our agreement and establish 21st century standards to the benefit of our citizens,” the three countries said in a trilateral statement released by the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR).

USTR Robert Lighthizer, Canadian foreign affairs minister Chrystia Freeland and Mexican secretary of the economy Ildefonso Guajardo led the respective teams that discussed more than two dozen topics during the negotiations, which also engaged the private sector, industry associations, civil society, labour groups and legislative representatives.

The negotiators agreed to provide additional text, comments or alternate proposals and continue domestic consultations during the next two weeks and reconvene in Mexico for a second round of talks from September 1 to 5.

The teams will meet in Canada in late September and return to the United States in October, with additional rounds being planned for the remainder of the year. (DS)
