US textile & apparel imports fall 2.91% in Jan-May '16

The import of textiles and apparel by United States dropped 2.91 per cent in the first five months of 2016 to $41.353 billion, compared to imports valued at $42.594 billion made in the corresponding period of last year, according to the Major Shippers Report, released by the US department of commerce.
 
The US imported $14.095 billion worth of textiles and garments from China, which accounted for 38.25 per cent share of all textile and garment imports made by the US in January-May 2016, the data showed.
 
Vietnam, India, Bangladesh and Indonesia were the next four top suppliers of textiles and garments to the US, with goods valued at $4.476 billion, $3.210 billion, $2.365 billion and $2.118 billion, respectively, during the five-month period.
 
Segment-wise, the US apparel imports during the first five months of 2016 were valued at $31.081 billion, whereas non-apparel imports accounted for $10.272 billion.
 
Among the top ten apparel suppliers to the US, exports from El Salvador increased at 4.28 per cent year-on-year, while those from Vietnam, India and Bangladesh rose at 4.07 per cent, 1.97 per cent and 1.87 per cent, respectively. On the other hand, Cambodia, Mexico and Honduras saw their exports decline by 13.09 per cent, 7.59 per cent and 5.18 per cent, respectively, over the corresponding period of 2015.
 
In the non-apparel category, among the top ten suppliers, the import from Turkey shot up by 9.18 per cent year-on-year to $342.835 million. While imports from Taiwan, China and Pakistan dropped by 11.37 per cent, 9.67 per cent and 7.27 per cent to $179.489 million, $4.520 billion and $610.355 million, respectively.
 
Of the total US textile and apparel imports of $41.353 billion during January-May 2016, cotton products were worth $18.740 billion, while man-made fibre products accounted for $20.286 billion, followed by $1.263 billion of wool products and $1.063 billion of products from silk and vegetable fibres.
 
In 2015, the US textile and apparel imports increased by 4.15 per cent year-on-year to $111.928 billion, with apparel alone accounting for $85.164 billion. (RKS)
