Frustrated by slow pace of Brexit talks: UK minister

Top British cabinet ministers are ‘frustrated’ by the slow pace of Brexit talks, but are loyal to Prime Minister Theresa May as she negotiates the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union, finance minister Philip Hammond recently said. He played down the mention of apparent rifts in the cabinet by foreign minister Boris Johnson in a British daily.

He assured his support for the prime minister in the complex and delicate negotiations to deliver the exit in the way the British people want, according to British media reports. He was speaking at the Conservative Party’s conference in Manchester.

The sooner the government gave businesses more certainty about the process, the sooner the economy would pick up, Hammond recently told the BBC's Today programme. The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) had cautioned some time back that public disagreements between ministers were undermining business confidence.

Johnson, in his article for the Sun newspaper, said May's planned transition phase must not last ‘a second more’ than two years. It is the second time in a fortnight he has set out his own vision for Brexit.

Hammond is reportedly on the side of cabinet faction wanting a ‘soft’ Brexit, also favoured by May, where the United Kingdom maintains close regulatory and trade ties with the European Union for many years to come. The other faction, which includes Johnson, want a ‘hard’ Brexit, in which all links will be quickly cut off. (DS)
