The Indian government wants to create more employment in the backward and tribal areas and recognise, respect, support and facilitate women entrepreneurs and offer them incentives, according to Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) minister Nitin Gadkari, who last week virtually inaugurated the 10-day 'Namaste Bharat' exhibition.

Namaste Bharat is backed by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) and the High Commission of Singapore in India.

"We are giving highest priority for how we can reduce our import and increase our exports. The global economy is an open platform where the quality, cost and scale of marketing of products are very important factors. Presently, MSMEs are the backbone of the country," the minister said.

Through the Khadi Gram Udyog, the government is now concentrating on village industries and areas that are socially, economically and educationally backward, he added.

Meanwhile, the department of posts (India Post) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) entered into an agreement for electronic exchange of customs data related to postal shipments exchanged between the two countries, an official release said.

The agreement will make it possible to transmit and receive electronic data of international postal items prior to their physical arrival at the destination and would enable customs clearance of postal items in advance in line with the evolving global postal framework. This will also improve the performance of postal services in terms of reliability, visibility and security.

The agreement will benefit India’s MSME exporters and e-commerce retail exporters.
