West Bengal government will introduce a new textile policy after the Durga Puja in October, Manas Bhunia, Textile and MSME Minister has said.

The new textile policy will be comprehensive and aimed at re-establishing the past glory of the handloom and khadi industries of the State, he said.

The Minister, who is in-charge of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) industry apart from textiles, said the new government inherited a State economy that had a heavy debt burden.

However, he expressed hope that MSMEs would greatly contribute to extensive development of the State.

The main issues impeding the growth of the MSMEs are scarcity of raw inputs, land acquisition, communication gap, poor marketing and inadequate funds, the Minister said.

Hence, in order to put the State economy back on track, he said, all the issues are being broadly deliberated with experts in the State.

He informed that a State Level Advisory Board headed by Anup K Chanda, Additional Chief Secretary, Department of MSME and Textiles, has been constituted for considering all the issues confronting the textile industry.

The Board would engage industry experts to trace the problems and suggest solutions for the same.

Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry Vice President, Harsha K Jha said the MSME sector is estimated to account for around 22 percent of the State's total GDP by 2012-13, while accounting for 60 percent jobs in the organized sector. Thus, policy reforms hold to be a key concern for development, he added.

Mr. Bhunia also revealed that in order to capture global market, the government is planning to display the State's handlooms, handicrafts and powerlooms at a fair in Birmingham.
