Now that the serial measurements “Size Germany”, which all German fashion retailers of the Otto Group took part in, have been completed, the latest body dimensions are being translated into precisely tailored cuts. As soon as these cuts are in use, Otto Group fashion customers will be able to buy excellently fitting clothing more easily than ever before - without having to try them on.

In Germany, previous serial measurements were carried out 15 years ago for ladies and 29 years ago for men. Since then, body shapes have changed significantly. Although cuts were regularly updated in response to specific customer feedback, a reliable statistical basis for well-fitting cuts has only been available with the latest measuring results. Between July 2007 and October 2008, more than 13,000 men, women and children between the ages of 6 and 87 were measured. The latest serial measurements are a joint project between textile research centre Hohenstein Institute and body scanner manufacturer Human Solutions GmbH.

Under the management of testing institute Hansecontrol, all German fashion retailers of the Otto Group signed up for the latest serial measurements. For the benefit of their customers, the companies have thus gained specific knowledge of the average body dimensions of the different sizes and body types. Based on this latest reliable information, the quality developers of the Otto Group are now able to further optimise existing cuts and create well fitting new cuts.

“We want the fashion customers of the Otto Group trading firms to look good and feel beautiful, and for a good reason, wearing our cuts. The results of the serial measurements provide an ideal basis”, says Hartmut Meier, Managing Director of Hansecontrol. Precise information on how the sizes and body types are quantitatively distributed across the German population will further allow the retailers of the Otto Group to attract and tastefully clothe new target groups.

The results of the measurements are only available to companies that have a financial stake in “Size Germany”.

The testing institute Hansecontrol does not just support the trading firms of the Otto Group in the complex task of translating the measuring results into well-fitting cuts for customers. The institute also actively supports all company clients who were involved in “Size Germany” and who would like to take advantage of the advice provided by the institute.

Founded in 1949, the Otto Group is now a worldwide-operating trade and services group with 52,668 (February 2008) employees.

Hansecontrol offers manufacturers, retailers and consumers a wide range of accredited testing and consultation services for consumer goods and commodities. The independent testing laboratory has become established as an internationally recognised and certified testing institute.
