Riverbed Technology, the IT performance company, announced that Alsco, a commercial textile services company, has deployed Riverbed Steelhead appliances in its primary data center and disaster recovery (DR) site. With the deployment of Steelhead appliances, Alsco doubled the amount of data transferred from its data center to its Atlanta DR site and met its goal of improving the security of the company's data and operations without increasing costs.

Alsco, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, is a commercial textile services company that was founded in 1889. The company has more than 300,000 customers in 12 countries across five continents, providing rental and cleaning services of napkins, tablecloths, uniforms and other linens for customers like Outback Steakhouse and Olive Garden; and non-linen operations in additional locations. Through an acquisition Alsco gained a data center in Atlanta, which is now used as the company's DR site. However, due to its distance from the DR site and the effects of latency, Alsco began experiencing slow replication times.

"Our replication times were peaking for hours and stressing the network to recover when there were interruptions," says Darin Regis, Alsco's network manager. "After the seamless integration of the Steelhead appliances, those peak periods have dropped by 75 percent. We have been able to double the amount of data transferred from Salt Lake City to Atlanta (from 700GB to 1,400 GB) without increasing the backup window."

The installation of Steelhead appliances significantly decreased replication and recovery times, enabling Alsco to improve its recovery time objectives (RTO) and recovery point objectives (RPO). The company now has a faster, more reliable DR strategy that doesn't incur new costs, or negatively impact productivity.

"Thousands of customers in the service industry depend on us to deliver clean linens to keep their frontline staff looking professional. Without a good DR plan in place, an outage could negatively impact our operations and disrupt the business of our customers," Regis says. "With the Steelhead appliances, I'm confident in the resiliency of our IT infrastructure. We should be able to recover from an outage, or even a disaster, quickly enough to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction."

Riverbed delivers performance for the globally connected enterprise. With Riverbed, enterprises can successfully and intelligently implement strategic initiatives such as virtualization, consolidation, cloud computing, and disaster recovery without fear of compromising performance.

As the first company to introduce commercial textile services to the world in 1889, Alsco not only pioneered the concept, we created the industry standards. A short list of our other firsts include: Inventing the continuous towel dispenser, pioneering the use of garment lockers, and being a leader in the laundering and delivery of ready-to-wear uniforms for virtually every type of application imaginable.
