According to Dr. Chularat, the knowledge gained from using the 3D Body Scanning technology in the SizeThailand programme is also leading to other benefits and is “rapidly being put to use by programme partners”. She said that:
• “Thai Wacoal is preparing to use the technology in its made-to-measure business for international customers. Customers will be able to measure their sizes overseas and then send the data to NECTEC which will produce 3-dimensional drafts and accurately determine sizes for Wacoal to custom make clothes in Thailand for export.”
• The Faculty of Medicine of Ramathibodi Hospital has initiated a pilot e-health project applying 3D Body Scanning technology in NSTDA's annual physical check-ups. The data is used to offer nutritional advice as well as analyze the specific health risks associated with the patient's physical figure.”

Dr. Chularat explained that the 3D Body Scanner works by projecting white beams onto the body which is detected by sensors on 12 spots. The computer processes the resulting images and forms sketches of major features which are connected to make a 3-dimensional surface. Software then determines landmarks on the body and automatically measures physical figures.

The data obtained are more accurate than those which are obtained manually. The data is processed using Swarm Intelligence technology. In charge of the process is expert programmer Dr. Supiya Charoensiriwath who used the technology to generate the SizeThai chart.

According to SizeThailand data:
• Based on Body Mass Index (BMI), 36.21% of Thai men have a normal shape, 58.43% are overweight, and 5.36% are underweight. For Thai women, 42.26% have a normal shape, 48.05% are overweight, and 9.69% are underweight.
• The average Thai MAN weighs 68.94 kg, is 169.38 cm tall, and has a chest size of 39.1 inches, waist 33.5 inches, and bottom 37.4 inches.
• WOMAN weighs 57 kg, is 156.89 cm tall, and has a chest size of 36 inches, waist 31.5 inches, and bottom 38 inches.
• The average figures of Thais in each region – Central, North, Northeast, South and Bangkok – are very similar.

SizeThai (acronym TH) consists of nine standard sizes for men: TH 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, 46, and 48 based on the measurement of chest and waist. For women, there are ten sizes: TH 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44, and 46 based on the measurement of chest, waist and bottom. The majority of Thai men are size TH 40 and the women 36.

In recognition of potential uses of the database in different industries that may need very specific data, the research team is working to broaden applications of SizeThai.

NSTDA is Thailand's top science and technology organisation. NECTEC, which operates under NSTDA, supports the development of electronics and computer technology in Thailand and its applications in industry and research.
