In recognition of its strategic, innovative technology, J. C. Penney Company, Inc. was ranked No. 6 on the 2009 InformationWeek 500 and was named the Category Winner for Supply Chain and the Industry Winner for Retail. These honors were presented at the InformationWeek 500 Conference and awards gala ceremony on Sept. 14 in Dana Point, Calif.

“To rank sixth on the InformationWeek 500 list and be named a category and industry winner is a great honor for JCPenney and our entire IT team,” said Tom Nealon, chief information officer for JCPenney. “We believe investing in IT, particularly in a downturn economy, is a competitive advantage for our Company, and are encouraged to continue to develop innovative technology solutions that are key to driving business and maintaining our strong industry position.”

“For over 20 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology,” said InformationWeek Editor-in-Chief Rob Preston. “Year after year, InformationWeek 500 companies harness technology to improve efficiency, boost productivity, drive revenue, and establish a competitive advantage. We applaud this year's winners, and the CIOs and other executives whose ingenuity and risk taking are at the center of business technology innovation.”

JCPenney's Door to Floor technology was cited by InformationWeek as one of the “20 Great Ideas.” The technology enables store management to know what merchandise will be delivered up to 48 hours in advance, allowing for optimal planning and preparation for getting merchandise off the truck and onto the sales floor. The end result is greater efficiency in terms of merchandise speed to floor, set execution and overall increased productivity. The time saved is reinvested in customer-facing activities, in line with the Company's CustomerFIRST initiative. Based on impressive results, Door to Floor has been rolled out to the Company's more than 1,100 stores.

InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing, now in its 21st year, and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America's best-known companies. Top winners have included: Conway, National Semiconductor, Kimberly-Clark, Hilton Hotels and Unum. The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as they spotlight the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
