Due to their nature of work most policemen are covered with dust and sweat while working outdoors in warm weather and one may avoid meeting them, but if they smell good and fresh one might approach them for assistance.
Somesh Singh, a designer at National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad is designing uniforms for policemen permeated with the fragrance of flowers and citrus to help improve their image on request of the State Government.
The uniforms are slated to be introduced in couple of months to around 300,000 state's police.
For this purpose, cotton with a fragrant finish, reflective prints and fiber optic technology will be used to ensure that uniform not only smell good but also glows at night for officials to be located easily.
The uniforms will retain the scent even after washing as the fragrance is embedded in the cotton during processing.
"We are tired wearing the thick cotton brown color uniform with a broad belt and plastic badges for several decades now," said R.K. Patel a senior police officer.
"If the new uniforms makes us stand out in the crowd, keeps us active with pleasant aroma and is yet very formal, then we are all for it," he said.
