BIOPOLYMERS: driving force for textile innovation!

1 min read

Interest in Biopolymers is growing very rapidly. This is partly due to environmental concerns, increasing oil prices and the threat of future oil shortages, but also due to the innovation potential linked to these new polymer systems.

Expectations of biopolymers are very high. Starting from very little in 2000 (> 25kton), high growth scenarios are predicting European production of up to 800 kton in 2010 and even 3,000 kton in 2020.

Especially towards the second period the expectations for industrial implementation in textiles applications is very high. New polymer families often with special properties such as controllable biodegradability, along with improved fire resistance, hydrophilic properties and water management, high UV resistance, etc.

indeed offer a lot of innovation potential in both bulk and niche market applications. Research will be needed to optimise the polymers and polymer properties for the specific processes applied in textiles, and to adapt the downstream processing of the developed products.

Presentations on biopolymer production, innovations in processing and testing procedures for biodegradability will highlight the latest developments in this area and will generate new ideas for future innovations and specific applications.
