The Australian Wool Production Forecasting Committee (AWPFC) has forecast greasy shorn wool production at 325 million kg in 2015/16, down 6.1 per cent as against in 2014/15.

AWPFC noted that for the 2015/16 season, AWTA test data showed a significant increase in the weight of wool 16.5 micron and finer and no change in the volumes of 17 micron wool.

“There was a decline in the volumes of wool for all other micron ranges broader than 17 micron and a significant drop in wool volumes between 21.6 and 23.5 microns,” the committee observed.

AWPFC chairman Russell Pattinson said, “Many regions are now reporting excellent conditions, which are expected to result in better average wool cuts per head in 2016/17.”

“However, for some states, this improvement is unlikely to become evident until summer and into autumn 2017, as spring shearing will have been affected by the dry conditions up to autumn this year,” he added.

According to the committee, a key influence on wool production in 2016/17 will be lower opening sheep numbers as very dry conditions in many regions for much of 2015/16 resulted in a continued turn-off of sheep and lambs.

“While those decisions will mean fewer sheep shorn in these areas in 2016/17, the improved seasonal conditions are expected to see producers retaining more sheep this season,” AWPFC averred. (AR)
