American Woolen Company (“American Woolen”) announced the acquisition of Loro Piana’s Warren of Stafford textile manufacturing facilities located in Stafford Springs, Connecticut. American Woolen, a company with a rich history of craftsmanship and manufacturing excellence, will own and operate the worsted and woolen manufacturing complex. This transaction represents an important milestone in preserving the textile manufacturing heritage of eastern Connecticut.

American Woolen’s roots date back to the first half of the 20th century when it was America’s worsted and woolen apparel fabric leader, manufacturing in over sixty wool mills located throughout the Northeast. In 2013 the company was acquired by Jacob Harrison Long, an American entrepreneur, with the goal of reintroducing the concept of premium apparel textile manufacturing to the American market.

Jacob Harrison Long said, “We look forward to continuing the tradition at Warren, leveraging the facility’s state-of-the-art manufacturing infrastructure to create a product that satisfies consumers’ increasing desire for American-made luxury, quality, and authenticity. American Woolen will replicate the European approach to textile manufacturing, delivering a collection of exclusive, all American-made worsted and woolen apparel fabrics.”

Stafford Springs’ only surviving textile mill, Warren of Stafford in 1988 became a subsidiary of Loro Piana, which invested in technology to create a top-of-the-line manufacturing facility.  Loro Piana said it is grateful to have found a solution that will enable Warren of Stafford to continue to be a source of textile manufacturing and employment in the state of Connecticut.

Congressman Joe Courtney of Connecticut, an important supporter of the Warren of Stafford business who was instrumental in supporting the transaction, said, “This agreement to restart Warren Mills is the result of a dogged and determined effort by all parties, who refused to let this pillar of New England manufacturing disappear. It has been an honor to work with both Loro Piana and Jacob Long to overcome challenges and make this day a reality. Without question, the real heroes of this story are the working men and women of Warren Mills whose special talents have made the mill so irreplaceable.”

About Jacob Harrison Long
Jacob Harrison Long leads the American Woolen Company management team. Before moving into textile manufacturing, Jacob spent 20 years as a Europe-based investment banker. While working in Italy from 2006 to 2012, he developed extensive contacts in – as well as a deep appreciation for – the Italian textile and apparel industry with its focus on product quality and luxury versus the large-scale, commodity-oriented manufacturing that typifies the U.S. textile industry. He acquired the assets of American Woolen Company with the aim to replicate the European approach to textile manufacturing in the United States.
