The woollen textile producers Vitale Barberis Canonico and Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti have been awarded with the third Fabric No. 1 trophy, a prestigious annual award that honours the season’s finest Merino wool fabrics manufactured by the world’s premiere mills.

The American luxury department store chain Saks Fifth Avenue joined forces with the Australian-based international wool textile organisation The Woolmark Company for the second consecutive year to handover the titles, recognizing this year’s best made-to-measure suit fabrics and sport coat materials, at a special award ceremony held at the former’s flagship store in New York City.

Judged by a panel of Made-to-Measure experts from both the companies, the competition, which invited about 30 mills to submit two signature cloths per category from their Fall/Winter collections, honoured Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti for its suiting material and Vitale Barberis Canonico for sport coats.

While announcing the prize winners, the SVP GMM of Saks Fifth Avenue Men’s, Home, Food and Gifts, Tom Ott, says “We're thrilled to announce our third year of the Fabric No. 1 competition, which is returning in 2014 for a second year of partnership with The Woolmark Company.”

“Our collaboration with The Woolmark Company provides a greater ability to highlight the mills’ quality and fabrics. Together, we broadened the competition globally this year with a total of 30 international brands who submitted fabrics for consideration,” he adds.

The Italy-based Vitale Barberis Canonico’s Fall-2014 range features a high-blue soft and cool-to-touch cashmere/wool blend fabric that has been produced using an innovative sustainable purification technology which ensures the water and air release from the manufacturing process do not harm the countryside.

The suit fabric category’s champ Lanificio Fratelli Cerruti’s was inspired by the art and architecture of 1950’s New York. The checked blue Merino wool and cashmere material is reminiscent to the sky-reflective glass towers of Manhattan’s skyline.

The specialty retailer Saks Fifth Avenue specializes in a range of American and international designer collections. The company operates through a network of over 39 full-line stores in 22 states, five international licensed stores, 78 Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH stores and saks.com.

The Woolmark Company is the global authority on Merino fibres. The organization engages itself into the research and development of better textiles. The company’s iconic Woolmark symbol, which was born in 1964, withstands as a reassuring proof of extraordinary versatility and innate luxury of Merino wool for several decades. (PB)
