Leading luxury menswear brand and one of the most renowned businesses in Italy, Ermenegildo Zegna has announced its selection of the best wool fleeces of 2015, which have been awarded at its new boutique in Melbourne. The event marked the 52nd edition of the Wool Awards that was established in 1963, it said in a statement.

Paolo Zegna, chairman of the Ermenegildo Zegna group, awarded the Vellus Aureum Trophy to “Rowensville”, owned by David and Susan Rowbottom who presented a magnificent fleece of 10.1 micron. The second place went to “Pyrenees Park”, owned by Robert and Pamela Sandlant. “Currawong”, owned by Geoffrey and Heather Phillips, won the third place. The three pairs of winners are from Victoria.

For the historic National Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Trophy – the longest existing competition in the world of wool, Paolo Zegna awarded the top prize to Allan and Carolyn Phillips of “Glen Stuart” (Tasmania). The second and third places were respectively won by Andrew and Penny Hundy, from “Windradeen”(New South Wales), and David and Angie Waters, from “Tarrangower Merinos”(New South Wales).

This year’s event also celebrated the opening of Ermenegildo Zegna’s new boutique at 45 Collins Street, Melbourne. With a retail presence in Melbourne since 2002, the new 410 sq m boutique is now the largest single brand, dedicated menswear store on prestigious Collins Street.

As another highlight to the Zegna Group’s on-going commitment to the Australian market, in 2014 the group announced the acquisition of the majority of Achill, a superfine merino wool property in Armidale, NSW, a step which further reinforces the importance placed on absolute quality and complete verticalisation as cornerstones of its long standing success.

“It is always an honour to give these awards" declared Paolo Zegna ."To prize the finest fleeces participating to our historical trophies constantly reminds how important wool is for our Group. Once more I can confirm our commitment in supporting the research of the highest quality of wool, the most significant raw materials of our productions. Superfine wool has always been significantly present in our formal collections and is more and more represented in our casual and younger lines.”

To celebrate the importance of wool, and to incentivize wool producers to evolve the quality and excellence of this multi-faceted fibre, Zegna established the first “Ermenegildo Zegna Extrafine Wool Trophy” in 1963 - in association with ASWGA, the Australian Superfine Wool Growers Association - to award and reward the Australian woolgrowers’ commitment to quality, Fleeces, all under 17.5 micron, are judged on the criteria of quality, weight, yield, trueness to type & bloom, conformity of length, evenness and excellence.

The annual Ermenegildo Zegna Wool Awards are open to Australia and New Zealand wool growers. (SH)
