NFU bats for teamwork to boost British wool market

In the face of high price volatility in the market, National Farmers' Union (NFU) has lauded the role of British Wool Marketing Board (BWMB) and called for greater collaboration in all aspects of the industry - from farm to fibre - to maximize returns for all stakeholders in the chain.
“Clearly, working together and collaboration are key to growing the market returns for wool which unfortunately remain relatively poor,” said Charles Sercombe, NFU livestock board chairman.
Lauding the role of BWMB, which has been collecting, grading, promoting and selling great British fleece wool since the 1950s and represents 45,000 wool producers, the NFU official said with a producer organisation such as the BWMB, “we continue to rely on them to achieve the best possible returns for producers.”
NFU is a representative body that provides professional services to its member farmers in Britain. Noting that the wool sector has seen little change in value, Sercombe said the collective strength also ensures wool producers can maximise the value of their wool.
“Wool is a global commodity and British wool amounts to only two per cent of global wool production. Therefore, having a strong producer organisation to compete in this global market is essential,” he said adding that “I want to see a real commitment from the BWMB, working with our sheep farmers to promote wool on a global scale in order to achieve the best possible price.”
The BWMB is also founder member of the global 'Campaign for Wool' – raising the profile of the benefits of wool as a quality fibre. (SH)
