At the second meeting in Ulaanbaatar last month of the working group of the European Union (EU)-funded TRAM project for setting up a cluster of yak and camel wool in Mongolia, participants discussed the legal environment for clusters, an organisational structure, funding for European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) projects and creation of a website.

This cluster will manufacture products from yak and camel wool, promote it in markets abroad and cultivate partnerships with foreign companies, said a press release from the Mongolian National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MNCCI).

Mongolia encounters hurdles when exporting its goods because of weak industrial capability, lack of competitiveness in promotion and packaging, according to MNCCI secretary general B Saruul, who said it is important to tackle these issues through mutually-beneficial clusters.

Started in 2017, the TRAM project aims to contribute to the Mongolian economic growth by supporting an increase in non-mining sector exports. The project will last till 2021 in cooperation with the ministry of foreign affairs and the MNCCI.

The project enables non-mining sector businesses to gain better access to foreign markets, reduce export costs and ensures that Mongolian exporters improve their profitability in targeted international markets. (DS)
