Sarat Family has its roots dating back 50 years when Late Shri Purushottam Das Ladsaria first founded Sarat Bleaching Pvt. Ltd in Calcutta, India. Over the next couple of decades, the company furthered its niche into fabric dyeing with Sarat Processing Pvt. Ltd. and also forayed into apparel exports to the U.S. market under the banner of Sarat Exports Pvt. Ltd. Late Shri Ladsaria is still remembered and revered by the industry more than 15 years after his demise. His son and present chairman of the company, Mr. Sharad Agarwal is also recognized as a learned individual having done his M. Tech from U.K. He has recently been joined by his son Uday Agarwal upon completion of Textile Engineering Honors and Masters in Business Administration from the US.

A vertically integrated enterprise, Sarat Exports enjoys complete ownership of the garment value chain with operations starting with yarn dyeing, fabric knitting and processing (dyeing, bleaching and finishing) followed by cutting, manufacturing and trimming through to the final garment finishing, packing and dispatch. Marketing and distribution operations are also carried out by sister concerns, Tiger Hill Inc. and Pudala Inc. located in Atlanta, GA and Houston, TX, USA.

Specifics concerning some of the member units of the family are provided below:

  1. Sarat Bleaching Pvt. Ltd.: Wholly engaged in full bleaching of knitted fabric for over 40 years. The unit spreads across 18,000 sq. ft. and employs 48 persons. Total production capacity amounts to 5,000 kgs. per day.
  2. Sarat Processing Pvt. Ltd.: Established 22 years back for the purpose of dyeing hosiery fabric. A total of 74 persons are employed under a roof spanning 21,000 sq. ft. Current capacity is 6,000 kgs. per day.
  3. Sarat Exports Pvt. Ltd.: Founded 20 years ago. Operations include knitting of fabric, processing (bleaching, dyeing and finishing) of the same and subsequent CMT (cutting, manufacturing and trimming) of knitted and woven garments. Product line includes men's golf shirts, tee shirts, sportswear, ladies tops, skirts, bags, aprons as well as custom products.
Key manufacturing operations are carried out at the following establishments:
  1. Knitting Division:
    The concerned division is spread across 15,000 sq. ft. will be producing knit fabric for outer garments as well as hosiery products. 25 knitting machines have been imported to produce a gamut of fabrics ranging from single jersey, interlock and rib through to terry towel, fleece and other novelty fabrics using 4-track designs.
  2. Fabric Division:
    The Fabric Division operates from two factory sheds with a combined floor space of approximately 30,000 sq. ft. and employing 80 people. The division is equipped with 80 circular knitting machines producing several variations of single jersey, interlock, rib and fleece fabrics.
    As an extension of the knitting facility is a separate factory floor with raising, shearing and heat setting machines from internationally reputed makers Lafer and Mario Crosta. The existing infrastructure at the facility can support a daily production of 8,000 kgs with substantial expansion initiatives currently in the works.
  3. Bleaching Division:
    Another expansion project currently undertaken is the Bleaching Division. Spread over 17,000 sq. ft., the factory shall be engaged in bleaching of hosiery fabric. The total bleaching capacity of the factory will be over 12,000 kgs. per day with the first phase of operations starting in early 2010.
  4. Processing Division:
    Making its way through the value chain, Sarat Exports also runs an in-house processing factory spread across 60,000 sq. ft. with a total workforce of 300. Sarat Exports is proud to state that the concerned facility is the first in India to import and operate Bruckner/ Erbatech's Continuous Bleaching Range for bleaching of knit fabric. The factory also has several exhaust dyeing machines thereby expanding its operational capabilities beyond bleaching to dyeing and chemically finishing fabrics. To attain premium quality standards, the company maintains a top of the line finishing range with padding machines, wet expanders, hydro-extractors, relaxed flat dryers, compactors and calendars with precision plating by world renowned textile machinery manufacturer Heliot. The total processing capacity at this facility is 25,000 kgs. daily.
  5. Garmenting and Dispatching Divisions (SEZ):
  6. Sarat Exports operates a total 4 of garmenting/ dispatching units, with the primary one functioning out of a Special Economic Zone located in Falta, West Bengal. The SEZ facility has 150 people working under a 35,000 sq. ft. roof and is solely dedicated to manufacturing and shipping out woven products. The other 3 units primarily manufacture knit products and are located in Kolkata city. Taking into account all the manufacturing facilities, Sarat Exports has a total garmenting capacity of 1500 units (700 woven and 800 knit) on a daily basis. Total installed fabric knitting and processing capacity amount to 8,000 kgs. and 25,000 kgs., respectively. Garment production capacity is 1500 units (700 woven and 800 knitted) on a daily basis.

The product range of Sarat Exports includes knitted fabrics like 100% cotton, poly-cotton blends and plaided fabrics as well as woven fabrics such as cotton twills and poplins, poly-cotton poplins, canvas and linen. While the knit fabrics are produced in the company establishments itself, the woven fabrics are outsourced from various mills that are able to meet the specific requirements. Principal woven items include dress shirts for men and women in the corporate sector, hunting and fishing shirts for outdoor activities and vests, jackets, aprons that find application as uniforms. Being vertically integrated provides Sarat Exports greater flexibility and allows the company to cater to a wide customer base by manufacturing custom products as per the needs of its customers.
