Urvashi Kaur

A graduate in Fashion from Esmod Intl, Paris (Ecole Superieure des Arts et Techniques de la Mode). Constant exposure to myriad cultures through her travels and working for fashion moguls like Issey Miyake and Marcel Marongiu has been a catalyst in developing a complex body of work that goes beyond fashion and draws inspiration from art and culture.

The Label, “URVASHI KAUR” embodies global fashion –a hybrid expression of thinking globally and acting locally, making her designs global in their construction but defiantly Indian in their sensibility. Indian handloom and organic textiles, textures and colors fascinate Urvashi and the same serves as the genesis of all her collections with a vision to make her label an economically sustainable and culturally influential brand. Her strength lies in presenting her outfits as separates through the use of layering. Unconventional drapes and textural treatments on fabrics is her forte.

Urvashi has successfully accumulated ample credits and awards to her label “URVASHI KAUR” since her debut at Lakme Fashion week SS’08. From being featured in Elle India’s – The Graduates to being shortlisted as one of the top 18 designers at Vogue’s first Fashion fund. This helped in establishing her label’s presence in the country and gain popularity commercially as well as amongst top celebrities like Dia Mirza, Tisca Chopra, Gul panag and authors and singers such as Anuja Chauhan and Sonal Kalra who have all taken to the brand as patrons.

About Collection:

A secret turning in us
Makes the universe turn.
Head unaware of feet,
And feet head. Neither cares.
They keep turning.”
                                  - Rumi

Retaining the Designer’s signature style, Urvashi Kaur’s S/S ‘14 collection titled ‘SEMAH’ epitomizes the state of trance in harmony with nature and all its elements. The Collection seeks to celebrate the three unified states of human nature- the mind (as knowledge and thought), the heart (through the expression of feelings, poetry and music), and the body (by activating life, by turning).

The organic feel is highlighted by a restrained palette of colors encompassing natural dyes like indigo, reds, greys, ochre, and ecru.

The silhouettes are brought to life with the use of indigenous hand-woven organic textiles from Kutch and Andhra. Sheer cotton weaves like Kota, mulmul; chanderi and linen lend fluidity to the collection.

Engineered placements of twisted tie/dye technique evoke the ‘Bandhej’. Mosaic styled geometric patterns derived by block prints paired with rouching/pleating technique along with versatile separates with touches of volume and movement in drapes set a dramatic rhythm.

Tunics with asymmetric folds and hemlines, angarkha inspired Djellabas and long voluminous tops and dresses are the mainstay of the collection. Peplum vests, wrap jumpsuits along with cowelled shalwars, Farsi pajamas and pleated shararas confirm to the mystical vibe.
