Sears Canada Inc has won the Retail Sustainability Award at the Excellence in Retailing Awards celebration dinner held by the Retail Council of Canada earlier this month. The Company received the award for its "Live Green at Sears: Reducing Our Footprint…Helping Canadians Reduce Theirs" program that aims to reduce the Company's environmental footprint and help customers do the same.

The award coincided with week-long announcements about Sears sustainability initiatives which took place during Canadian Environment Week, including one of the largest replacements of inefficient lighting ever undertaken. There were also announcements about the recognition of the Sears Calgary National Logistics Centre as an ISO 14001 facility as well as the discontinuing by the Company of the sale of incandescent bulbs in their stores. Sears was also named by the government of Canada as the Natural Resources Canada 2011 ENERGY STAR Retailer of the Year.

"Sears is honoured to receive the 2011 Retail Sustainability Award from the Retail Council of Canada," said Dene Rogers, President and Chief Executive Officer, Sears Canada Inc. "We want to make it easy for our customers to live green and this award shows our commitment to help Canadians make energy-efficient and money-saving purchase decisions, in addition to reducing the impact of our operations on the environment and nurturing a culture of sustainability with our associates, customers and communities where we operate."

In 2008, Sears Canada committed to a 20 per cent reduction in its carbon footprint by 2013. Sears is on pace to beat that target with innovative programs which have already reduced its footprint by more than 15 per cent. The improvements to the business are ongoing. The latest initiative is the replacement of 130,000 inefficient incandescent spotlights with energy-saving LED (light-emitting diode) lighting in all Sears Home and full-line stores across Canada is in progress. This is one of the largest replacements of inefficient lighting ever completed internationally, saving the Company more than 16 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year, enough energy to enable 197,000 families to use the most efficient washing machines for a full year.

These improvements to internal operations are part of the award-winning Sears "Live Green" initiative as are awareness campaigns geared to educating customers on how to reduce their energy bills and create a healthy home. Sears innovative Cost and Carbon Calculator, an online and in store tool that demonstrates to customers the financial and environmental benefit of switching to ENERGY STAR products and services.

Sears Canada is a multi-channel retailer with a network that includes 196 corporate stores, 272 hometown dealer stores, 33 home improvement showrooms, 1,800 catalogue merchandise pick-up locations, 108 Sears Travel offices and a nationwide home maintenance, repair, and installation network.
