The wool is graded based on fiber diameter, length, and other factors. Lanolin, a waxy ester, is a natural oil secreted by sheep's sebaceous glands and is trapped in the wool fibers. It protects the sheep from the elements, has waterproofing properties, and helps prevent the wool from felting. Greasy wool is processed into finished products using either the worsted or woolen system, depending on the fiber length and grade. The yield refers to the percentage of clean wool remaining after contaminants are removed. A well-nourished, even wool will yield better than a wool with inconsistent contamination.
