War planes were roaming in theskies at will. Dr.Rose, a US army surgeon was posted in a war field somewherein the Middle East. Suddenly the roaring became louder as the plane glideddownwards right above his head. Bang! There was a violent explosion. Theearth jolted and thick clouds of smoke and dust rose above. When it settled abit, the scene Dr. Rose saw in front of his eyes was unforgettable in his wholelife. His colleague was fatally wounded and bleeding badly due to a rocket-propelledgrenade attack. Dr. Rose was not able to put a tourniquet to control thebleeding and save him. All he could do was to watch his comrade breathe hislast. Once he returned to US, he spoke with BlackHawk, a Virginian provider ofmilitary and law enforcement devices. This was the inspiration behind thedevelopment of BlackHawk's Warrior Wear System, clothing with built-intourniquets.
Tourniquets Savior of theWarfield:
Atourniquet is a device used to control arterial circulation by applying circumferential pressure on the skin and the tissues beneath it. They are used to prevent severe blood loss from limb trauma in times of emergency. Black Hawk hasdeveloped clothing with tourniquet straps sewn into the clothing and coveredby a fabric fastener. This cost effective and life saving device would be priced around $200 USD and will be available in the market by this year.
When a major artery has beensevered and the bleeding is intense, tourniquets helpto stop the bleeding by applying direct pressure to the injury and stopping bloodsupply to the affected limb. Pressure is applied on the skin and the tissues beneathit. This pressure is transferred to the walls of the blood vessels, and thus thebleeding is ceased. This reduces the loss of blood, and consequential death.
Eight tourniquets, two in eachsleeve and two in each pant would be sewn and can be operated by the wearer,their buddy, or a medic.
TerryNaughton, director of industrial security at BlackHawk believes that 60 percentof injuries in military and law enforcement are due to extreme bleeding and 10percent of people die from injuries where blood loss cannot be controlled. Hefurther says, "We are confident that the day this hits the field, liveswill be saved, and if we save one person, we've done our job." Militaryofficials agree that having tourniquets readily available is highly important. Whilespeaking out his opinion about the product, Dr. Rose says, IntegratedTourniquet system will dramatically impact not only loss of life but also theamount of time that it takes to recover from extreme blood loss injuries.
Mike Noell, President and CEO ofBlackhawk says that their product is reusable and enables the users to trainwith the system again and again rather than having to replace the tourniquetafter every single use. The army men will wear the same system in the tacticaloperation. He has further declared that the revolutionary system is in thefinal phase of testing and would be available during the first quater ofCalendar 2008.
