Comprehensive facts about size zero:

Size zero has become a buzzword in the world of fashion during the recent past. Models with very low BodyMass Index (BMI) are regarded as size 0 models. It is a measure of body fatbased on height and weight of a person. BMI is calculated by taking the weightin pounds (1 kg = 2.2 pounds) and dividing it by the height in feet. Forexample: Weight = 45 kgs, i.e. 99lbs, and height is 59, then BMI will be:99/5.9 = 16.7. World health Organization considers a BMI of 16 or below to beunhealthy. Size zero is linked to anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder thatcreates obsessive fear of gaining weight.

Size zero is the new age womansantidote, a Venus attitude. Carrie Bradshaw (Sex and the City) states that, inside every fat woman is a thin one waiting to get back into them. Theobsession of models to ascent to pole position among her peers force them toopt for size zero protocol. Their dramatically low weight has become adangerous influence on young woman trying to mimic the same. This has become agrowing trend, and is no longer limited only with catwalks and silver screens.Women try to imitate this Barbie doll appearance and the numbers are growing atan atrocious high speed.

Debates on size zero:

This trend began in US, andwas fuelled by a few fashion designers, who repeatedly exhibited collectionsthat can be worn only by size zero models. The death of Luisel Ramos during the Uruguay fashion week sparked debates about size zero clothes. Due to anorexianervosa, she had been on a diet of lettuce leaves and diet coke for threemonths. This resulted in a heart failure, and the 22 year old model collapsedduring the show. Months later, her sister who was just 18 years old met withthe same fate. 21 year old Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston died out ofrenal failure due to her extreme efforts to become slim. It was reported thather diet was only apples and tomatoes. Victoria Beckham has been warnedrecently, that she is risking her health by dieting due to the obsession ofwearing US size 0 clothes. Once famous for her curvy structure, this star nowis being warned for her extreme diet. A recent survey in Britain revealed the shocking fact that one out of every hundred women surveyed hadanorexia.

Spain in on a mission to end size zero models. Madrid was the pioneer fashion capital to ban size 0 models, followed by Milan. Madrid Fashion week set a minimum BMI of 18 for all participating models. Discussions are further going on between the health ministry of Spain and retailers like Mango and Zara so as to ban even the stores from keeping mannequins of that size. Soon size zero mannequins will become extinct even from the store windows. Italian fashion designers, as a wake of Ramoss death, banned all skinny size 0 models walking in their catwalks. On the contrary, the London Fashion Week organizers disagree with this idea stating that designers persist on zero size models. There are many designers, models, and industry big-wigs, who are keen in speaking against the size zero backlashes.

Despite that debates for and against size zero has reached to epic proportions, there is a deafening silence regarding the verdict of whether or not to ban ultra thin, skinny models from floating on the cat walk ramps. Most of the designers believe that slender figure is the best to carry their clothes. Many others state that they do not take models who are anorexic, and skinny looking. Something that is natural can be worked upon to give it a makeover. Size zero would look good, only if the body structure is so; naturally. But, not being naturally slender; trying to achieve that slimness artificially by putting too much stress would give only adverse results.

Since time immemorial, there has been a female ideal. This has been changing time and now; from curvaceous loveliness to an unachievable size which most women aspire to mimic. It is the designers choice ultimately to select the models who would appear on the runways. So they should select models who are fit and healthy as a precedent.
