Cottongarments continue to enjoy the largest share


Textileexports continued to witness growth. During April-December 200708, it saw agrowth of 9.33 per cent. Exports were worth US$12002.10 million during theperiod as against US$10977.60 million during the same period of 2006-07. Inrupee terms however, a similar comparison shows that exports had declined by3.13 per cent during the period as against the same period of the previous year.


CottonGarments continued to occupy the largest share in the export basket. During April-December 200708, the share of the segment was a good 43.20, only marginally down from theshare of 43.25 per cent that it had occupied during the month of November.Comparing the segment's share during April-December 2007-08 with that of thesame period last year, shows a decline of 1.52 percentage points during thecurrent period.


Interms of share, Cotton Garments was followed by Cotton Textiles which occupieda share of 28.12 per cent in total exports. Exports in the segment was worthUS$3375.63 million during April-December 2007-08.


Indollar terms, except for Man Made Fibre Garments, all segments recorded a gainin exports during April-December 2007-08 as compared to the same period of the previous year. The decline witnessed in Man Made Fibre Garments was to theextent of 12.89 per cent. Exports declined from US$712.89 million during April-December 2006-07 to US$621.02 million during April-December 200708. In Rupee terms, thepercentage of decline was 22.82 per cent. Among the segments that gained, thehighest growth was that of Manmade Textiles (29.28 per cent). This was followedby Garments of Other Textile Materials which gained by 22.64 per cent. The gainin segments other than these two, were lesser than 10 per cent.


USA continued to be the largest importer of textile products from India. USA also continued to see a decline in its imports. USA's imports were worth US$2641.65 million during April- December 2007-08 as againstUS$2777.98 million during April-December 2006-07, a decline of 4.91 per cent.The only segment where USA had seen a gain in its imports was Garments of OtherTextile Materials where it saw imports increase by 11.38 per cent.

Turkey continued to record high growth in its imports. Ascompared to imports that it had made during April-December 2006-07, importsduring April-December 2007-08 were 118.74 per cent higher. Turkey's imports were worth US$388.29 million during April-December 2007-08. The growth inits import was due to the high volumes of Cotton Textiles and Man made Textilesthat it had imported during the period. In fact, these were the only segmentswhere Turkey figured among the top ten importers.
