Abstract
Today's medical textile market is producing stateof the art polymeric textile implantable devices that are redefiningtraditional materials and methods of surgery. These sophisticated high-techpolymer materials are engineered for specific uses in surgical andinterventional procedures. One of the new biotextile products is an absorbablebi-directional barbed surgical suture that does not require surgical knots forwound closure. This novel idea has the attention of many physicians andsurgeons where wound closure or tissue approximation is needed. The barbedsuture has the potential to change the way wound closure is perceived invarious clinical fields of surgery and veterinary medicine. Surgical gowns musthave a barrier effect between the sources of infection and the user (i.e. ahealthy person), as well as good wearing comfort. They are often made of wovenPolyester fabrics. Different fabric constructions are available for thispurpose; these are evaluated with reference to their barrier properties.
The medical textile industry has diversified withnew materials and innovative designs due to evolving polymer technology.Textiles structures in implantation are identified by structure, materialcomposition, and behavior of fiber surface and degradation. Biocompatibilitytesting evaluates the response of host system to the medical textiles. Resultof this testing must be viewed along with the risk and benefits of the device.Biotextiles are defined as structures composed of textiles fibers designed foruse in specific biological environment (e.g.: - surgical implants, bloodfilters, surgical dressing, etc) where their performance depends upon theirinteraction with cell and biological fluids as measured in terms of theirbiocompatibility and biostability. Sutures are the most common biotextileimplantable devices due to their diverse usage in surgical application. Theyare used to achieve around closure whenever tissue separation has occurred dueto an incision, puncture, abrasion or other surgery.
