Velveteen occur in every segment of the textile market: clothing, automotive industry, decorative textiles, transport, and special fabrics.

The mechanical properties of the ground fabric in velvets used for upholstery are especially important, as the ground fabric bears the fabric strength, durability, and the ease of manipulation during upholstering. This research deals with the ground fabric of face-to-face woven velvets, in particular the influence of ground fabric design variations on the fabrics mechanical properties.

The research shows that the strength properties of face-to-face woven velvet for upholstery depend on the structural characteristics of the ground fabric (warp and weft density). The influence of the ground fabric design can not be seen if the selected ground fabric is treated as a plain structure. The key factor in improving velvet performance by selecting suitable ground fabric design lays in examining the positioning of wefts caused by the tight warp.
