ABSTRACT:


Amongall textile fibres, cotton is the one most commonly used in domesticapplications. The permanent fire proofing of natural origin textiles, e.g.cotton is still challenging because only a surface treatment can be applied.However, it is also one of the most flammable materials (limiting oxygen index18.4%). Thus, the primary importance for public safety is to find ways torender this material less flammable in a most economically and environmentallyfriendly manner. This paper provides a brief review of the present situation inthe area of cellulosic materials flame retardancy with a brief explanation ofthe mechanism of thermal degradation of cellulose.


1. INTRODUCTION


Humansafety issues play a lead role in the mainstreaming world security, ensuringthe prevention of accidents which can cause injurious effects to human healthor life in general. Therefore, human safety has a nature of complex andinterconnected activities.


Deplorablestatistics have clearly shown that fires can cause huge material losses;besides, textile materials may pose a significant fire hazard. The most lethaldomestic fires are often caused by burning cigarettes, lit candles or childrenplaying with matches and setting fire to furniture.
