Pillsare tiny ball like masses of tangled fibers that appear on fabric surface.Pilling can affect the fabric properties such as aesthetics, hand, comfort, andservice life of the fabric. Such pilling of fabrics would be influenced bynumber of parameters under fibre, yarn and fabric. Fibre type, slendernessratio, tensile strength, fatigue, bending rigidity and initial modulus are someof the parameters that would influence pilling under fibre category. Yarn type(ring, O.E, friction, etc.), TPI, blend ratio, are some of the parameters thatwould influence pilling under yarn category. Weave (Plain, Twill andSatin/Sateen and their derivatives), EPI, PPI, Cover Factor, GSM, etc. are someof the parameters that would influence pilling under fabric category.
Thoughthere are studies on pilling of textile materials a comprehensive studyfocusing on these parameters are only limited. Therefore in this project it isaimed to study the pilling characteristics of textile materials and develop adata bank with respect to various parameters. Accordingly, in the first part ofthe project large numbers of commercial fabrics based on natural, synthetic andtheir blends have been collected. Subsequently the fabrics have been subjectedto pilling test using ICI pill box tester as per the standard BS 5811.
