Mr Gautam C Jain, Chairman, Pokarna Group, started off with retailing and wholesaling of Raymond Fabrics along with his family in 1979-80 and within a short period, earned the distinction of being Raymond Limited's leading distributor in India. His achievement of racing ahead of several established firms is more due to his individual skill in identification of good material both in terms of designs and fabric quality to suit the changing tastes and fashions from time to time and adoption of a combination of marketing strategies. He is also credited with bringing out new designs, which were adopted by Raymond Limited. Extending his skills in colors and designs from fabrics to natural stone, he started the granite business in 1991. Taking a major deviation from the general trend of setting up processing plants, Pokarna Limited started with quarrying, as he believed that raw material was the strength of the industry. After consolidating on the quarrying activities, Pokarna Limited went for forward integration into processing of granite blocks into slabs and the rest is history.
In an industry otherwise considered sick and on the negative list of Banks & Financial Institutions, Mr Gautam Chand Jain is successful in turning around two sick units acquired from Financial Institutions into profit making units. Identifying proper persons for the job and guiding them all through, he brought the best out of his team who produced excellent results.
Mr Gautam Jain, in one to one with Ms Madhu Soni, Sr Correspondent & Editor, Face2Face, throws light on areas of improvement that the Indian garment industry needs to work on, currently.
Mr Jain, how would you describe your group’s presence in textile arena today? Please also apprise us about your company’s present capacities.
As a Stanza brand, it is more of retail presence that we mark. We are present with almost 200 multi brand outlets and currently have about 13 shops of our own, and planning to open up few more stores such that by end of this year it would be hopefully around 20 shops in the country. Recently, we have tied up with Central Malls. We are part of Hyderabad Central currently, and planning to get in to these malls in other states too. We have also joined hands with Westside in Chandigarh, and in this month, going to start with Westside in Ludhiana and Indore. We have plans to expand this presence gradually.
Our manufacturing capacity is around 100 thousand shirts in a month. We envisage upcoming two quarters very good for our turnover. We are quite positive about good profit margins therein.
