Versatility, comfort & identity matter more to us than chasing trends
GKD Edit is a contemporary womenswear label focused on statement pieces that balance strong design identity with comfort and wearability. The brand creates versatile silhouettes crafted for modern lifestyles, allowing women to express personal style with confidence across various everyday settings.
In a conversation with Fibre2Fashion, Creative Director Garima Karwariya highlights that the brand was born from a clear gap in contemporary fashion between trend-heavy disposability and impractical occasion wear, offering elevated yet effortless pieces designed for real, everyday wardrobes. Rooted in strong silhouettes, thoughtful details, and comfort-led design, the brand reflects a shift toward intentional dressing, versatility, and long-term value for modern Indian women.
What gap in the contemporary fashion market led you to launch GKD Edit?
I noticed that much of contemporary fashion sits at two extremes: it is either overly trend-driven and disposable, or beautifully crafted but limited to specific occasions.
Fast fashion often lacks soul and longevity, while high-fashion occasion wear can feel impractical for everyday life.
As someone juggling work, meetings, travel, social commitments, and family life, I wanted clothing that looked refined but felt easy to wear, along with a single destination where finding the right fit did not demand time or effort.
There was a clear gap for well-designed statement pieces that could live in a real wardrobe: pieces you could style differently, wear repeatedly, and still feel confident in. That gap is what led to the creation of GKD Edit.
The idea was to design versatile silhouettes with a strong design identity, comfortable fits, and thoughtful details, allowing women to express their personal style with ease and confidence.
How would you define the core design philosophy behind GKD Edit’s collections?
At the core of GKD Edit is the idea of creating statement pieces that still feel easy and wearable. I am very drawn to strong silhouettes, sculpted drapes and fluid movement, but comfort and functionality are just as important to me as aesthetics.
Every collection is designed keeping in mind the different moods. Any dress you pick can be styled in different ways for different occasions. You can confidently repeat the outfit and yet not feel guilty about it.
I focus a lot on balance: feminine yet structured, modern yet timeless, expressive yet practical. We play with colour, texture and form, but always with the intention that the garment should integrate effortlessly into a wardrobe, not feel like a one-time piece.
At its core, GKD Edit aims to help women feel confident, comfortable, and creatively empowered through what they wear.
The brand balances minimalism with statement details. How do you strike that balance?
For me, balance comes from being very intentional with design choices. I usually start with a clean, strong silhouette, something that feels effortless and flattering and then build in one or two statement elements rather than overloading the garment.
It could be an interesting drape, a bold cut, a unique texture, or a subtle play of colour. Minimalism gives the piece longevity and versatility, while the statement detail gives it personality and individuality.
I constantly evaluate whether a design remains wearable and versatile. If it feels overly busy or too driven by trends, we refine and simplify it.
How does GKD Edit adapt global trends for the modern Indian consumer?
We closely observe global trends in silhouettes, colours and styling, but we never lift them directly. The Indian consumer has a very different lifestyle, climate, cultural sensibility, so adaptation is key.
I look at how a trend can translate into something more wearable, breathable and versatile for Indian conditions. For instance, a strong international silhouette might be softened with fluid fabrics, or a bold trend colour may be reinterpreted in a more refined, flattering tone.
We also keep layering, comfort and ease of maintenance in mind. The idea is to offer a global aesthetic that feels intuitive and relevant to an Indian wardrobe.
What role do fabric selection and fit play in shaping your collections?
Fabric and fit are foundational to how we design at GKD Edit. A silhouette can look beautiful on paper, but it only truly comes alive when the fabric moves well on the body and feels comfortable throughout the day. I spend a lot of time selecting materials that drape fluidly, breathe well in Indian weather, and hold structure where needed. The tactile experience matters just as much as the visual appeal.
Fit is equally critical because confidence comes from how a garment sits and moves with you. We constantly refine our patterns and proportions to ensure ease of movement, flattering lines and realistic sizing.
Our goal is to create pieces that feel effortless to wear but still look elevated and thoughtfully crafted, so women feel comfortable, secure and confident the moment they put them on.
How do you ensure consistency in quality as the brand scales?
Maintaining quality while scaling is something we take very seriously. We have built strong relationships with our fabric suppliers and production partners so there is consistency in material, workmanship and timelines.
Every new design goes through multiple sampling and fitting stages before it is approved for production, and we are very hands-on with those processes.
As we grow, we are also strengthening our internal quality checks, from fabric inspection to finishing and final dispatch.
At the same time, we are careful not to scale faster than our systems can support. For me, protecting the integrity of the product and the trust of the customer always comes before volume.
Which customer feedback has most influenced your product evolution so far?
One piece of feedback that truly stayed with me came from a client who purchased her birthday outfit from us. After her celebration, she flooded our WhatsApp with photos from the evening, almost every picture had her smiling so beautifully that the happiness genuinely spoke through the images. She kept telling us how confident and comfortable she felt in the outfit, and how it made her feel special without feeling overdone.
It was not just about the garment looking good, it was about how it made her feel in a real-life moment that mattered to her. It pushed us to further focus on creating pieces that make women feel special.
What is your long-term vision for GKD Edit in India and internationally?
In India, I want GKD Edit to become a go-to label for women looking for elevated, versatile pieces that fit seamlessly into their wardrobes, not trend-driven fashion, but pieces with longevity and identity.
Internationally, the ambition is to slowly and strategically introduce the brand to global markets that appreciate design-led, emerging labels.
I see GKD Edit positioned as a modern Indian contemporary brand that offers strong silhouettes, refined detailing and a global aesthetic, while staying authentic to our design language.
The focus will always remain on controlled growth, maintaining quality, strengthening our community of customers, and building a brand that feels meaningful, trusted and enduring rather than fast or mass driven.
How is the contemporary fashion industry in India evolving in terms of consumer preferences and buying behaviour?
Indian consumers today are far more informed and intentional about what they buy. There is a clear shift from impulse buying towards investing in pieces that offer versatility, quality and long-term value.
Women want clothes that can transition across occasions something that works for a brunch, a date, a celebration or travel with just a change of styling.
There is also a growing appreciation for homegrown brands. Customers are looking for unique designs, better fits, responsible production, and a personal connection with the label.
Digital platforms and social media have made trends more accessible, but they have also made consumers more aware. They are not just chasing trends anymore, they are building personality that reflect their lifestyle, social status. This evolution is pushing brands to be more transparent and design-driven rather than purely volume-focused.
What are the biggest challenges and opportunities for emerging fashion brands in today’s digital-first retail landscape?
One of the biggest challenges for emerging brands today is standing out in an extremely crowded digital space. With constant content, fast trend cycles and heavy discounting, it is easy for brands to get lost or pressured into chasing short-term visibility rather than building long-term identity. Logistics, rising marketing costs and maintaining consistent quality at scale are also real operational challenges.
At the same time, the digital landscape offers incredible opportunities. Brands can build direct relationships with customers, tell their story authentically, and receive real-time feedback that helps refine product and design.
Social media and e-commerce have levelled the playing field, allowing niche brands to reach a global audience without massive infrastructure. For emerging labels, the opportunity lies in staying focused creating trust and loyalty rather than just transactions.
