Point6, founded by Patty and Peter Duke in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, is built on the Dukes’ legacy as pioneers of Merino wool innovation. After introducing Merino to the outdoor community with their first venture, the couple set out to create a brand that would make Merino wool more comfortable, longer lasting, and accessible to all.
At the heart of Point6’s innovation is Compact Spinning, a technology that reduces pilling, enhances softness, and makes its Merino products 25 per cent more durable than traditional ring-spun yarn. With production based in the US, a strong focus on sustainability, and initiatives like ‘Protect Our Playgrounds’ supporting conservation, Point6 combines technical performance with an authentic outdoor lifestyle ethos. Speaking to Fibre2Fashion, CEO Peter Duke shares insights on the brand’s journey, philosophy, and future of Merino innovation.
What inspired you to start Point6, and how did your experience at Smartwool influence your approach to this new venture?
I was very proud to introduce Merino Wool to the outdoor community. It gave them a new understanding of how well wool works in both hot and cold temperatures, and that it will last for a number of years before needing replacement. Smartwool introduced a concept of Wool on Wool. What that was is they reinforced the heel and toe area with wool. (A marketing ploy). I later learned that the Smartwool socks were being returned daily because people were developing holes in their socks within days of wearing. That inspired me to start Point6 to demonstrate that Merino wool socks are durable.
How does Point6’s brand philosophy differ from traditional Merino wool companies, especially in terms of pricing and product accessibility?
We go the extra mile (technology and quality) regardless of the additional cost to continue to improve performance and comfort. Our approach is to sell Direct to Consumer, offering substantial savings on all products. In today’s world, cost is almost everything, and we at Point6 do not want people to be swayed away from Merino wool because of its high cost.
The ‘lifetime guarantee’ is a key part of your promise. What kind of return or replacement data have you seen, and how do those insights inform product improvements?
We do get returns for various reasons. Regardless, we always replace them with no questions asked. Usually, when socks are returned, people will express their reason and of course we respond internally if we notice a problem developing.
Can you explain Compact Spinning and why it is a game-changer for Merino durability, feel and longevity?
This is not an easy question to explain, but here goes: When the wool fibres are being turned into a yarn, the machine starts to spin the merino and centrifugal force throws the shorter hair fibres to the outside of the yarn. That is why when you hold up our competition’s socks you will see a bunch of fuzzies (what I call it) and it is these fibres that pill up, ball up and eventually wear holes in the socks. Compact spinning incorporates centripetal force in the spinning process, that pulls those loose fibres into the middle or centre of the yarn, eliminating the fuzzies. This process increases the durability by 25 per cent and also allows for the smaller fibres (the smaller the fibre is the softer the yarn) to aid in comfort. Compact spinning by the way is more expensive to buy.
Point6 claims its Merino is 25 per cent more durable than ring-spun yarn. How have you validated that durability both in lab conditions and real-world use?
The yarn spinners that produce the compact spinning have the scientific studies and can be validated from them.
Your socks include up to ten performance zones. How do you balance technical construction with everyday comfort?
The performance zones is how we are able to develop socks for people in their everyday needs. A person who needs socks for just going to work or walking will require a different method of knitting providing the comfort and performance they need.
How do you approach product development when considering outdoor, athletic, and everyday consumers? Are there significant differences in Merino use cases?
Depending on the activity, whether skiing, hiking, or running, different knitting methods are required. For instance, in skiing, expert skiers who prefer a tight-fitting boot for performance benefit from ultra-light, thin socks. Recreational skiers, on the other hand, often prioritise comfort, so socks are knitted with cushioning (loops) to add volume and softness. The same principle applies to running and hiking.
What key markets or demographics are you currently focusing on, and are there any plans to expand internationally or into other product categories?
We currently sell internationally through our network of distributors in various countries. In addition, we serve the tactical sector, including armed forces and firefighters. One of our key innovations is the VBL sock, developed with Arctic explorer John Huston, designed to keep feet warm in the harshest climates. Beyond socks, we have also expanded into other product categories such as base layers, T-shirts, hoodies, and men’s boxers.
What role does local sourcing and US-based knitting play in your commitment to sustainability and job creation?
We manufacture our socks in the US. It helps create jobs for local residents and also eliminates the need to shipping product overseas. The unfortunate point is that Merino Wool is only produced in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and South Africa. Any company claiming they get Merino Wool from the US is not telling the truth. The wool that is produced in the US is Ramboule wool. It is a crossbreed of Merino. It does not produce the finest and softest wool.
Point6 uses recycled poly-mailers. How do you ensure such practices are truly embedded?
We believe in incorporating sustainability wherever possible and using recycled poly-mailers is simply an extension of our overall brand mission. Doing the right thing often costs more, and our customers appreciate our dedication to incorporating sustainability wherever possible.
What steps have you taken at the farm and fibre sourcing level to ensure your Merino meets ethical and environmental standards?
We buy our Merino directly from the farmers/ranchers in New Zealand. We know them personally and have been to their farms watching how they process and care for the animals.
What role do certifications like ZQ or RWS play in building consumer trust in sustainable performance apparel?
It is a process that has been going on for close to 15 years. In fact, the person behind the start of RWS is a Merino farmer in Western Australia. Today’s consumers are increasingly mindful of their purchases, focusing on ethical treatment of animals and the elimination of child labour. The movement is gaining momentum, and companies like Point6 must ensure they adhere to these ethical standards—spoken or unspoken—and be able to demonstrate compliance.
What are the biggest challenges in maintaining ethical and transparent supply chains in the performance apparel industry today?
For Point6, I do not find it a challenge to maintain ethics and transparency. All that is needed is to have that culture within your company, seek out the best, and the results will speak for themselves.
How is the performance wear industry evolving in terms of material innovation, particularly with natural fibres like Merino wool?
So far, the key innovation has been compact spinning, which enhances the quality and consistency of Merino wool. Much of the progress in performance wear comes from advancements in machinery, which continue to refine how natural fibres are processed and utilised, ensuring improved durability, comfort, and overall performance in the final product.
How is the shift towards year-round outdoor lifestyles influencing product development and marketing strategies in the performance wear sector?
The shift towards year-round outdoor lifestyles has reinforced the importance of layering. In winter, wearing a high-performance fibre next to the skin and adding Merino as a mid-layer provides exceptional warmth, as its millions of tiny air pockets act as natural insulators. In summer, the focus shifts to moisture management. Unlike synthetics, which wick sweat into the shoe and leave it damp, Merino wool absorbs and evaporates moisture, keeping both the foot and shoe dry. This ensures comfort in all conditions—preventing feet from freezing in the cold or overheating in the heat.
With rising consumer awareness around microplastics and synthetic fibres, how do you see the demand for natural performance fibres shaping the future of outdoor gear?
Merino Wool no doubt is the best performing fibre on the market. In today’s world, with advanced technologies of synthetic fibres, it requires companies like Point6 to learn how to incorporate the two into a better performing garment for different environments and climates. In fact, we will be introducing in the Spring of 2026 a blend of Tencel and Merino wool to make a lighter garment for the extreme heat.
