We use high-quality, responsibly sourced materials
Sansaar, a brand by D'Decor, is a tribute to conscious living, where luxury meets sustainability. Rooted in eco-friendly sophistication, Sansaar meticulously crafts premium home décor fabrics that blend timeless elegance with responsible practices. Committed to a greener future, Sansaar integrates ethical sourcing, minimal resource usage, and innovation to inspire mindful living. In an interview with Fibre2Fashion, Co-founder & Creative Director Sarah Arora discusses the evolving landscape of sustainable home textiles, the balance between luxury and eco-consciousness, material innovations, and the brand’s commitment to ethical craftsmanship and mindful living.
How is the home textiles industry evolving in terms of sustainable material innovations, and what challenges still hinder mass adoption?
The home textiles industry has seen remarkable innovation in sustainable materials, with brands moving towards organic fibres, recycled textiles, and biodegradable options. Fabrics such as organic cotton, bamboo, and hemp are becoming more mainstream, alongside innovations like recycled polyester and upcycled fabrics. However, challenges to mass adoption remain. There is still a gap in consumer awareness, and sustainable materials often come with higher production costs, which can limit accessibility. Furthermore, there is a lack of standardisation in eco-certifications, which can make it difficult for consumers to confidently assess the true sustainability of products. The industry must focus on educating consumers and streamlining processes to make sustainability both desirable and affordable.
With the rise of eco-conscious living, how are consumer expectations shifting in home décor, and how can brands better cater to this trend?
Eco-conscious living is reshaping home décor, with consumers now prioritising sustainability, ethical sourcing, and long-lasting quality over short-term trends. They seek products that not only beautify their spaces but also align with their values—whether that is through materials that are sustainably sourced, energy-efficient production methods, or even brand transparency. Brands that cater to this trend must focus on authenticity and quality, offering products with a clear, traceable supply chain and communicating their environmental impact. By embracing ethical practices and offering transparency, brands can meet the growing demand for eco-friendly home décor while also setting themselves apart in a competitive market.
Sansaar emphasises ‘luxury meets consciousness’. How do you balance aesthetics and sustainability in your design philosophy?
Luxury and sustainability are often perceived as opposites, but at Sansaar, we believe they go hand in hand. True luxury today is about thoughtfulness—understanding how a product is made, where it comes from, and the impact it leaves behind. We achieve this balance by using high-quality, responsibly sourced materials that not only exude opulence but also contribute to a more sustainable future. Through design innovation and conscious craftsmanship, we ensure that Sansaar remains aspirational while staying committed to ethical and environmental responsibility.
What are the key influences behind Sansaar’s latest collection? Do global trends or local craftsmanship play a bigger role?
The key influences behind Sansaar’s latest collection lie in a perfect fusion of both global trends and India’s rich design heritage. The Indian rich heritage provides inspiration through timeless patterns, intricate motifs, and ancient weaving techniques. These elements are reimagined with a modern approach, reflecting contemporary colour palettes, refined textures, and versatile designs that resonate with today’s global homes. While global trends certainly influence the need for contemporary aesthetics, it is the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of India that gives the collection its unique identity and depth. By blending these influences, Sansaar ensures that the pieces feel both timeless and fresh, celebrating Indian heritage while making it relevant for modern living spaces.
Your fabrics incorporate recycled polyester and organic cotton. What innovations or new materials are you exploring for future collections?
At Sansaar, we are continuously exploring ways to elevate our materials to further align with our eco-conscious values. In addition to using recycled polyester and organic cotton, we are committed to expanding our sustainable product range. For 2025, we plan to increase the use of recycled yarns, organic cotton, and BCI cotton in our collections. We are also introducing our ‘Endurance’ range which consists of spill safe upholstery fabrics which are very low maintenance and easy to clean. Our goal is to maintain the luxurious beauty of our designs while pushing the boundaries of eco-friendly innovation. We are also working towards a greener future with initiatives like reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing renewable energy usage, and implementing water recycling programmes. Sustainability will always be at the core of our evolution, ensuring that we lead in both style and responsibility.
How does Sansaar ensure that sustainable fabrics maintain durability, texture, and premium feel?
We believe that sustainability should never compromise on quality. Our fabrics undergo rigorous testing in top-tier, NABL-certified labs to guarantee their durability, performance, and premium feel. We meticulously assess various factors, including pilling resistance, colour fastness, lightfastness, and abrasion resistance, to ensure that our fabrics maintain their elegance even with repeated use.
To guarantee longevity, we conduct Martindale Abrasion Resistance Tests, ensuring our fabrics withstand everyday wear and tear without losing their appeal. Additionally, we test for high pilling resistance, colour retention, and shrinkage, ensuring that our fabrics remain smooth, vibrant, and perfectly fitting after multiple washes.
Our commitment to durability extends to specific tests such as Tear Strength and Seam Slippage, which ensure that our fabrics remain intact and resilient over time. With our comprehensive testing, we are able to create fabrics that not only offer exceptional touch and luxurious feel but also stand the test of time, making them both beautiful and highly functional.
Many buyers still equate sustainability with a compromise in luxury. How do you educate customers about the value of eco-conscious textiles?
At Sansaar, we understand that the concept of sustainability often raises concerns about compromising on luxury. However, we are committed to showing that conscious choices and opulence can co-exist beautifully. Education plays a key role in this. We focus on informing our customers about the craftsmanship, material innovation, and ethical considerations behind every piece we create. By highlighting the superior quality of our eco-conscious textiles, we show that sustainability does not mean sacrificing luxury—on the contrary, it elevates the entire experience.
Through this approach, we make it clear that eco-conscious textiles are a long-term investment in both quality and the environment, enabling our customers to enjoy luxury that aligns with their values.
Have you partnered with designers or brands to push the boundaries of sustainable home textiles?
At this stage, Sansaar has not yet collaborated with other designers or brands. However, we are always open to exploring partnerships that align with our vision of conscious luxury and sustainability. We believe that collaboration is key to pushing the boundaries of innovation in sustainable home textiles, and we are continuously looking for opportunities to work with like-minded creatives who share our values. Our goal is to bring together expertise from different fields to create products that not only look and feel luxurious but also contribute to a more sustainable future for the home décor industry.
What role does AI, digital printing, or smart textiles play in enhancing the creativity and sustainability of your collections?
At Sansaar, we embrace the power of technology to drive both creativity and sustainability in our collections. AI and digital printing, in particular, allow us to push the boundaries of design while minimising environmental impact. Through advanced digital printing techniques, we can create intricate patterns and textures with significantly less waste compared to traditional methods. This enhances the creativity of our fabrics while reducing our carbon footprint. Additionally, we are committed to using eco-friendly dyes and chemicals, ensuring that our production process remains both innovative and responsible. As technology continues to evolve, we see it as a powerful tool to further our sustainability efforts while maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship and design.
How is the integration of AI, digital weaving, and smart fabrics redefining the design and functionality of luxury home textiles?
AI and digital weaving technologies have immense potential to redefine the design and functionality of luxury home textiles. While AI can revolutionise textile creation, at Sansaar, we currently focus on leveraging our data, experience and permutation-combination techniques at the factory level to align with our customers’ preferences and tastes. However, we recognise AI’s ability to enhance precision and efficiency, and we see it playing a larger role in our processes in the future.
One of the biggest advancements in luxury home textiles today is the rise of performance fabrics, particularly easy-clean fabrics, which are no longer an option but a necessity. These innovations ensure durability, convenience, and longevity without compromising on aesthetics. As the industry evolves, we aim to integrate more technology-driven solutions that enhance both design and functionality while staying true to our commitment to quality and sustainability.
What have been the biggest challenges in positioning Sansaar as a sustainable yet high-end brand?
Positioning Sansaar as both a sustainable and high-end brand has certainly presented its challenges. One of the primary hurdles is overcoming the perception that sustainability compromises luxury. We have worked hard to educate our customers that luxury today is no longer just about opulence and extravagance; it is about thoughtful design, ethical sourcing, and lasting quality. It requires educating consumers on the value of mindful consumption and demonstrating how high-end products can be both beautiful and environmentally responsible.
Maintaining the balance between craftsmanship, quality, and conscious production is key. However, with our constant focus on innovation, ethical practices, and eco-conscious materials, we have managed to successfully navigate these challenges and position Sansaar as a true pioneer in the conscious luxury space.
With increasing scrutiny on greenwashing, how important are third-party certifications (like GOTS, OEKO-TEX) in building consumer trust in sustainable textiles?
To begin with, a customer should be educated about the different certifications, which is what we are aiming to do through Sansaar. We want our customers to think about the impact their choices are making or can make. Third-party certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) and OEKO-TEX play a crucial role in combating greenwashing and building consumer trust. In a market where transparency is more important than ever, these certifications serve as a reliable benchmark for consumers seeking genuinely sustainable products. They provide an independent verification of a brand’s environmental and ethical claims, ensuring that the product has undergone rigorous testing and meets specific sustainability criteria. Given the rise in greenwashing—where brands make exaggerated or misleading claims about their environmental practices—third-party certifications help consumers make informed decisions and choose products that align with their values. For brands, obtaining these certifications demonstrates a genuine commitment to sustainability and ethical practices, fostering long-term consumer loyalty and credibility in an increasingly conscious marketplace.
How do brands navigate the tension between global textile supply chains and the growing demand for locally sourced, artisanal products?
Balancing global supply chains with the demand for locally sourced, artisanal products is a delicate act. On one hand, global supply chains provide economies of scale and access to materials that might not be available locally, but on the other hand, there is a growing appreciation for local craftsmanship and a desire to support smaller, artisanal businesses. Brands can navigate this tension by offering hybrid models—leveraging global supply chains for the raw materials or certain components, while incorporating local artisanship in the production process. This allows for both innovation at scale and a deeper connection with local cultures and craftsmanship. Transparency is key, and brands that can tell the story of their products—whether sourced locally or globally—will appeal to the ethically minded consumer who seeks authenticity in every purchase.
What upcoming design or sustainability trends do you think will shape the future of home textiles?
We believe that the future of home textiles will be shaped by several key trends that align with both evolving consumer preferences and the growing demand for sustainability. Firstly, minimalist designs will continue to dominate, as consumers increasingly gravitate towards clean, timeless aesthetics that create calm, serene spaces. Alongside this, there will be an even greater emphasis on sustainable materials, as more people seek products that align with their values of conscious living.
Another important trend is the integration of smart textiles, as technology advances in the home décor space. We expect to see fabrics that not only enhance comfort but also contribute to energy efficiency, cleanliness, and durability. As a brand, we are committed to staying ahead of these trends by consistently innovating and offering products that reflect our values of quality, style, and sustainability. Our upcoming collections will continue to incorporate these trends, ensuring that our designs meet the needs of modern consumers while maintaining our eco-conscious ethos.
As a Creative Director, how do you define luxury in today’s world of conscious consumerism?
Luxury today has evolved beyond just opulence; it is rooted in authenticity, sustainability, and responsible craftsmanship. In a world where consumers are more aware of their choices and their environmental impact, luxury is increasingly about creating products that are timeless, of high quality, and ethically produced. For me, true luxury is the ability to own something that tells a story—whether that is through the materials used, the artisans who craft it, or the transparency of the supply chain. It is not just about indulging in a beautiful object; it is about indulging in something that aligns with your values and supports the larger goal of sustainable living.
