Our platform is a transformative force in global fashion
The AFRA World is a premier fashion platform, founded in April 2022, dedicated to curating world-class fashion events that merge luxury, creativity, and emerging talent. Positioned at the heart of Dubai’s thriving fashion industry, AFRA fosters global connections by bringing together established brands, rising designers, and discerning audiences. By leveraging Dubai’s cosmopolitan appeal, AFRA not only elevates regional fashion but also drives cultural and economic impact, making it a pivotal force in shaping the future of fashion. In an interview with Fibre2Fashion, Founder & Creative Director Niti Gupta shares insights into The AFRA World’s journey, its unique positioning in the fashion industry, and its vision for the future.
The AFRA World has rapidly become a significant force in Dubai’s fashion scene. What inspired you to establish AFRA, and how has the journey been since its inception in 2022?
I noticed a gap in the fashion industry—there was no global platform dedicated to uplifting emerging designers. Additionally, a common space where emerging designers could showcase their work alongside established names was missing. This inspired me to create The AFRA World. The journey has been incredibly rewarding, and we are proud to have provided many young brands with an exceptional launchpad through AFRA.
With Dubai being a global fashion hub, what unique elements does AFRA bring to the industry that set it apart from other fashion platforms?
The AFRA World is a dynamic and comprehensive fashion platform that enables brands and designers to showcase their unique identity through various facets of the fashion industry. We offer designers and partners a transformative platform that includes fashion events, style shoots, runway shows, B2C exhibitions, B2B opportunities, and retail partnerships across the UAE. Additionally, we facilitate fashion collaborations in Eastern Europe, the UK, India, and Africa.
Beyond providing a global stage, The AFRA World creates a luxurious and trendsetting environment where designers can unveil their masterpieces. Our immersive showcases bring together some of the world’s most sought-after brands and emerging talents, fostering a unique synergy of style and innovation.
AFRA has successfully blended established luxury brands with emerging designers. How do you curate talent for your showcases, and what criteria do you look for?
The confluence of craftsmanship with contemporary design excites me. I am always eager to explore emerging ideas and discover hidden talent. Our selection criteria are based on the effective use of cultural craft, design skill, choice of colour palette and silhouettes, and how creatively these elements are reinterpreted into something fresh and wearable. For me, the sky is the limit when it comes to design, and I look for that same fire and passion in emerging designers before bringing them on board at The AFRA World. It is always fascinating to witness the blend of established luxury brands and rising designers on our platform, season after season.
What role do cultural influences play in AFRA’s selection of designers and themes for each season’s showcase?
Cultural influences are at the heart of The AFRA World. They fuel our creativity and expand our vision, allowing us to explore new artistic possibilities. We actively seek out designers from across the globe, embracing diverse perspectives and heritage.
The themes for each season’s showcase are deeply personal—I set them based on my intuition and experiences, drawing from my life and travels. I am a risk-taker in my curation, and I love introducing fresh concepts with the potential to become global trends.
Dubai is known for its luxurious and extravagant fashion culture. How does AFRA balance showcasing couture with making high fashion accessible to everyday consumers?
Each season, we curate a compelling blend of established international haute couture and exciting emerging talent, ensuring a balanced and engaging experience for all while keeping luxury as accessible as possible. A significant amount of time is spent selecting the ideal designers for The AFRA World, where I personally meet with each designer to review their collections and strategize for the Middle Eastern market. I focus on unique craftsmanship, contemporary universal silhouettes, and high-quality workmanship.
With 25 years of experience in the fashion industry and 12 years in fashion events, I apply my insights and expertise to select and nurture young talent and emerging designers, shaping them into the next big names in couture.
With the growing demand for sustainability, how can high-end fashion brands balance luxury and ethical production?
The high-end fashion industry can successfully balance luxury and ethical production by fundamentally rethinking raw material sourcing, production cycles, waste management, recycling, and climate-conscious practices. Designers can take the first step towards a sustainable future by embracing slow fashion collections and utilising eco-friendly fabrics.
Luxury fashion can absolutely be crafted from sustainable materials—it is all about ideation, innovation, and experimentation. This shift will challenge true design sensibilities, pushing creatives to redefine opulence within an eco-conscious framework. It will be fascinating to see which designers emerge as leaders in this space, seamlessly blending conscious craftsmanship with high fashion.
How does AFRA incorporate sustainable practices into its events and designer selections?
In October 2024, The AFRA World curated a dedicated Sustainable Lounge at The AFRA World Season 5, hosted at The Mandarin Oriental Jumeira. This exclusive space showcased the work of 6-8 pioneering fashion designers from Singapore, Sri Lanka, and India. Building on this success, our upcoming showcase in April 2025 will place an even greater emphasis on eco-conscious fashion. We are actively collaborating with Indian brands that specialise in innovative fruit-based fabrics and traditional dyeing techniques, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and ethical fashion practices.
The AFRA World Fashion Confluence 2025 is expected to be a global convergence of creativity. How will it differ from previous editions of AFRA events?
April 2025 marks Season 6 for us, and it will feature The AFRA World’s first-ever Runway Show. A few years ago, we introduced Fashion Walks, which quickly became a trendsetter for other events in Dubai. This year, the Runway is the highlight to look forward to.
Covering all aspects of the industry—including the Runway, Exhibit, Red Carpet, and Conference—this four-day fashion extravaganza will serve as a premier destination for the global fashion industry. The event will provide extensive international exposure for participating designers through B2B clientele, the AFRA Ambassador Awards, Dubai’s discerning B2C audiences, the UAE press, and fashion enthusiasts.
The fashion industry is constantly evolving with new trends and technology. How is AFRA integrating digital advancements like AI, virtual fashion shows, or the metaverse into its future vision?
The AFRA World Fashion Confluence is set to integrate digital advancements across the fashion and beauty sectors. With a diverse presence of established and emerging designers, along with a global clientele, The AFRA World provides an ideal platform for leading tech firms specialising in app-based beauty, fashion creativity, and design innovations to connect with an international audience. Our commitment to introducing dynamic activations ensures continuous engagement for participants, audiences, and partners, making The AFRA World a frontrunner in the evolving landscape of fashion technology.
How do you see technology, such as AI and virtual fashion, shaping the future of the luxury fashion industry?
Technology is an exciting yet essential part of every industry, especially fashion, which is constantly evolving. AI and virtual fashion come with both opportunities and challenges, but if we focus on the positives and harness their potential to drive business growth, we can minimise the drawbacks. The key lies in adapting and innovating, ensuring that technology enhances the fashion experience rather than replacing its essence.
How has consumer behaviour in the luxury fashion market changed post-pandemic, and what strategies are brands adopting to stay relevant?
They tend to favour brands they are already familiar with, making branding and storytelling more crucial than ever, especially as consumer attention spans continue to shrink.
Interestingly, a new wave of young designers is capturing significant market share by offering fresh creative products and personalised services, fostering a sense of community and increasing desirability.
To stay relevant, established luxury brands are stepping up their game by embracing sustainable practices, championing diversity and inclusivity, creating immersive brand experiences, strengthening their digital presence, and offering personalised services.
As consumer preferences evolve, luxury fashion must adapt, innovate, and remain culturally and socially aware to thrive in this new era.
How do you see AFRA contributing to the globalisation of fashion, particularly in positioning Dubai as a trendsetter on the world stage?
The AFRA World aligns with Dubai’s ethos of being a trendsetter and changemaker. Our platform is a transformative force in global fashion—one that inspires, empowers, and elevates the industry. By curating groundbreaking collaborations, merging global fashion influences, and nurturing emerging talent, we believe we are making a meaningful contribution to the globalisation of fashion. We provide designers from around the world with the perfect platform to grow, gain exposure, and emerge as key players in the industry.
What role do fashion exhibitions and trade shows play in shaping trends and driving business growth in the industry?
Fashion exhibitions and trade shows are among the most influential events in the industry. They serve as a dynamic platform that unites the fashion fraternity through meaningful human interaction, introduces new trends, fosters collaborations, and opens doors to new markets and clientele.
These events blend diverse cultures and designs, providing a launchpad for young entrepreneurs venturing into the competitive fashion space. For established designers and brands, fashion exhibitions act as a true measure of brand value in a highly digital world, offering visibility and real-time audience engagement.
Beyond business growth, these events are educational, inspiring, and highly productive, reinforcing their importance in the evolving fashion landscape.
How important is cultural representation and inclusivity in global fashion today, and what more can brands do to embrace diversity?
Cultural representation and inclusivity are essential in today’s global fashion landscape, reflecting the richness of diversity and cultural exchange. However, brands must move beyond tokenism and integrate inclusivity authentically across their entire identity.
Some dynamic brands are already making an impact by featuring diverse models and creatives in campaigns; collaborating with designers from different cultures; expanding product offerings to cater to a wider, multicultural audience; fostering diversity within their own teams and actively engaging with diverse communities; and integrating cultural craftsmanship and supporting cultural exchange programmes. By creating a conscious and mindful environment within their systems, brands can enhance their global appeal while ensuring genuine and lasting cultural representation in the fashion industry.
How do you see AFRA evolving in the next five years? Are there plans to expand beyond Dubai and establish a global footprint?
The AFRA World evolves every season, constantly setting new trends and pushing boundaries. With bold and dynamic curations, we see the platform growing exponentially over the next five years. There is a lot in store, and while we will reveal things as we go along, one thing is certain—The AFRA World is only getting bigger. Stay tuned!
