Our USP is environmentally focused designs
Vast is a surf and lifestyle brand that appeals not only to surfers but to all explorers who like quality beach and streetwear. As a brand founded in Los Angeles, California with global connections to Hawaii and Asia, Vast is committed to spreading good vibes, finding empty peaks, and celebrating the bounty of life in its many forms. The brand is founded by Sam Yang, an entrepreneur originally from Taiwan who grew up in his family’s apparel factory and spent much of his youth/young adult years living in Australia and California among surf culture. Yang speaks to Fibre2Fashion about the brand, its USP and top performing categories.

How and when did you start Vast? What was the motivation to start Vast?

The idea for vast came to me many years ago while travelling with friends, and we started with some tees and board shorts in 2010. We were motivated to create our own clothes that resonated with our passions: surf, travel, adventure, nature, art, and fashion.
 

What is the USP of Vast?

Our USP is environmentally focused designs that utilise as many recycled fabrics as we can source, as well as offering aesthetics that disrupt the surf industry for the positive.

What makes Vast different from other brands?

We are unconventional because we do not come from traditional surf background. We are a compilation of hyphenates joined by our love for the ocean, that bring our unique backgrounds and experiences together to bring new ideas and experiences to life.

What are some of the staples in a surfer’s wardrobe?

Chinos, hoody, tee, and board shorts should be there in a surfer’s wardrobe.

How big is your target market?

The surf industry is roughly $4 billion globally, and what we intend to do is build a bridge between surf and other communities offering bold newness.

What are some of the things surfers identify when it comes to fashion and clothing?

We do not think surfers identify with any fashion or clothing. To be honest, we do not want to be identified, or ‘boxed in’. But we at Vast realised that we can provide new variety and aesthetics that is not being offered currently. 

Which are your major markets?

Our major markets are all in the US. They include Los Angeles, Florida, Hawaii, New York City, Michigan and Texas.

What are your top performing product categories?

Boardshorts, surf tee, fleece, and outerwear (windbreakers) are our top performing categories.

Do you have a presence in physical stores? If yes, please share details.

Yes, we have accounts at Spyder Surf in Los Angeles, Slashers and Quality Surfboards in Hawaii, and our own store in Taiwan as well as numerous shops around the island.

What is next in the pipeline?

We went viral at the Bonzai Pipeline and continue to create new content and reach new communities. We hopefully can continue to create more moments and new connections with everyone in the future.
