British multinational assurance, inspection, product testing and certification firm Intertek has taken immediate and extensive measures to manage the risk of coronavirus infection within its operations in China and elsewhere that include quarantine periods for certain colleagues who travelled during the holiday and health and safety risk assessments for businesses.

While its mainland China business started operating from February 10, resumption of normal operations is expected to be disrupted for several days due to the mandatory quarantine requirements in place across mainland China, and to the travel difficulties our colleagues might experience, the company said in a press release.

The company’s Hong Kong operations resumed as usual on January 29. On February 11, it was confirmed that one of their employees who returned to work at the Hong Kong Garment Centre in Kowloon had contracted the coronavirus. He remains under observation in hospital. In light of the above, the company has decided to temporarily close its Hong Kong Garment Centre starting February 11 for 14 days.

Until all testing work in Hong Kong is resumed on February 25, all samples should be submitted to its other Hong Kong offices or Intertek offices in the Greater China region, the company said.

Its Taiwan operations resumed as usual January 30. The company has 85 sites in China. The actions we have taken in China include health alerts and guidance to staff, use of face masks, regular replacement and safe disposal of face masks, use of hand sanitisers and latex gloves, and disinfection of air-conditioning.

The company has put a complete restriction on international travel by its staff out of and into mainland China and Hong Kong.
