Planning & Development Board Punjab (PDBP) Chairman Irfan Elahi has extended an assurance for all possible steps and assistance from the Punjab and the Federal governments for revival of provincial and national garment industry.

Chairing a high level review meeting of sub-committees constituted by the Punjab Chief Minister for promotion of garment industry, Mr. Elahi said many opportunities are cropping up for Pakistani garment industry, as cost of Chinese garment exports is rising, while Bangladeshi garment industry is passing through crisis.

Hence, there is a need to introduce immediate steps for revival of the country’s garment sector to help it cash on the opportunities coming its way, he added.

However, before launching the revival drive, the PDBP chief stressed on the need to identify and analyse the reasons behind downfall of the industry, so as to avoid repetition of past mistakes. He said the recommendations of the sub-committees shall be submitted to the Chief Minister of Punjab, who is eager to take steps for revival of the garment sector at the earliest.

During the meeting, heads and members of the sub-committees also gave presentations on their final proposals on revival and promotion of garment industry.

Besides revival of the garment sector, other garment industry issues relating to energy crisis, skill development, import and export policy, garment clusters/industrial zones, logistic support, industrial forum and GSP-Plus access to the EU market were also discussed at length at the meeting.

At the meeting, representatives of the Pakistan Readymade Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PRGMEA) presented their views and recommendations for revival of the garment sector, solving energy crisis, improving law and order situation and establishment of specialized garment clusters.
