AATCC announces winners of JW Weaver Paper award

David Hinks holds a Bachelor of Science (Honors) in color chemistry, 1st class, and a PhD in color chemistry from the University of Leeds. He is the Cone Mills Professor of Textile Chemistry and associate head and director of graduate programs in the department of Textile Engineering, Chemistry, and Science at NCSU.

He is also director of the Forensic Sciences Institute at NCSU. He has published more than 78 peer reviewed papers, book chapters, book reviews, and poster presentations; has participated in more than 103 oral presentations; and has three US patents.

Hinks is a member of the Society of Dyers and Colourists (SDC), and served as the Academic Editor of their journal, Coloration Technology, from 1999-2011. He has served as chair of the International Standards Organization (ISO) TC38\SC1\Color Measurement committee from 2004 to the present. He is a member of the Inter-Society Color Council (ISCC), where he serves on the board of directors from 2007 to the present. He is a member of the National Institute of Justice Trace Evidence Steering Committee.

Hinks joined AATCC in1992. He serves as ISO spokesperson for International Test Methods, and as a member of RA36 Color Measurement Test Methods Committee. He has served as chair and secretary of RA 36, on the Color Science Symposium Steering Committee, and as a member of the Technical Committee for Research (TCR).

Hinks is the recipient of the 1998, 1999, and 2000 Novo Fellows award for research in textile chemistry and enzymes. In 2002, he won the NCSU Outstanding Teachers Award as well as the College of Textiles Outstanding Teachers Award and became a member of the NCSU Academy of Outstanding Teachers. He was also a College of Textiles nominee for the 2006 NCSU Alumni Undergraduate Teacher Award.

In 2010, Hinks received the Silver Medal for Service Award from the SDC, the NCSU Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension award, and the NCSU Alumni Outstanding Extension Service Award. He is also a previous winner of the Weaver Award; his "Development of a Novel Bleaching Process for Cotton" was the 2011 Paper of the Year.

Nathan Hall Weisner is a graduate student at NCSU, working on his PhD in chemistry. He has a BS in polymer and color chemistry from NCSU. Weisner is also the recipient of the Bereman Family Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The Weaver Award was established in February of 1979 to recognize the best peer reviewed paper published each year in the Textile Chemist and Colorist (now AATCC Review). In 1990, the award was named for J. William Weaver (1916-1990), who was chair of AATCC’s Editorial Board at the time of his death.
