Apparel body apprehensive of bandh call

An apex Bangladeshi apparel body apprehends that the series of shutdowns planned in the country by the opposition parties could prove to be a setback for the fast growing textile and garment sector.

On the eve of the 48-hour bandh call, starting today and also on July 10 and 11, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) said that it would impede positive progress of the industry, despite the apparel sector being kept out of the preview of the bandh.

Lead times will increase as the apparel sector too could be affected by the unrest, said BGMEA. The body is also fearful that, since it is salary time, any delay could lead to unrest among workers of the industry.
