Global buyers have cancelled or put on hold orders of readymade garments (RMG) worth $137.85 million from Bangladesh as many fashion brands have shut their stores in Europe and North America due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Bangladeshi exporters said the impact might be unbearable for the sector as cancellation orders or shipment delay notices are received every hour.

According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), 110 RMG factories last week informed the trade body that they received cancelation or shipment delay notices from the buyers for export orders worth $137.85 million.

Against this backdrop, the country’s RMG sector representatives held a meeting with the Buyers Forum, a platform of the representatives of global brands and buyers in Dhaka.

Both manufacturers and the brands voiced their concerns in the meeting, BGMEA president Rubana Huq said.

“In case of cancellations, we will have empty floors and we won’t be able to fulfil our obligations. Thus, we have urged them not to cancel. They have asked for some time to get back to us,” she was quoted as saying by Bangla media reports.
