Bangladesh’s Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) will introduce a new registration system for exporters to the European Union (EU), Norway and Switzerland starting next week. Exporters will have to align with the EU’s Registered Exporter (REX) system for self-declaration of the country of origin, by June 30 next year to avail of the generalised system of preferences.

In Bangladesh, EPB will distribute a unique registration number and issue a ‘statement of origin’ to the exporters for this, according to a report in a Dhaka-based English-language daily.
Exporters will have to renew their registration every year.
Commerce minister Tipu Munshi will inaugurate the REX system on July 21 at a ceremony at the EPB office in Dhaka.
The global transition period from the current system of rules of origin certification to the REX system started on January 1, 2017, and will last until June 30, 2020. (DS)
