Bata Shoe expects India to turn largest market in 2018

India is expected to turn the most important market in terms of turnover by the end of this year for Switzerland-based Bata Shoe Organisation (BSO), the parent company of Bata India, surpassing Italy, according to BSO director Christine Bata Schmidt, who was in Kolkata recently. India is already BSO's top market in terms of number of pairs sold.

Net sales of Bata India rose 6.2 per cent to Rs 674 crore in the quarter ended December 2017, as against Rs 634.6 crore during the corresponding quarter a year ago, a news agency reported.

The company will focus on a digital platform in the next few years but will avoid the discounting model to push sales, said Schmidt, adding that brick-and-mortar stores and digital platform will complement each other.

Bata India has about 1,200 stores across the country. (DS)
